Paul Merson might call time on his playing days but only if Portsmouth get promotion to the Premier League.

Paul Merson has been one of the major driving forces in Portsmouth's run away lead at the top of Division one , but he may call time on a long and great career that has seen him win many a trophy especially his career at Arsenal.

But Merson who was promoted from this division with Middlesborough would love to acheive that again with Portsmouth , if he does he may end his career on a high just like Stuart Pearce did with Man City last year.

Merson said "I want to keep my standards. I don't want to be mugging anyone in the Premiership."

Assistant Pompey boss Jim Smith said about Merson Smith said: "There is a long way to go and I would be surprised if he finished.
"Paul's a proud man and would love to finish on a high.
"I know what he's saying he's a very honest player."

It would be a fine end to a mans career that has had its up's and down's but more high's then low's and if Pompey do win promotion this year possible Merson's name will be etched in the history books at Fratton Park for some time to come.
