A last minute strike by Stern John sent Birmingham to Cardiff following their semi-final 2nd leg play off game with Millwall at the New Den.

With the game heading into extra-time and the possibility of Millwall advancing to the final due to the away goal ruling, Birmingham piled the bodies forwards as the seconds ticked away. A Martin Grainger corner was partially cleared by Dion Dublin before making its way back to Grainger via Paul Devlin. Grainger produced a cross that evaded Dublin to meet defender Steve Vickers who kept his cool and put in a low cross for Stern John who tucked home from 3 yards. It looked set for John to be the Blues villian following a one-on-one chance with Tony Warner that John missed. Dion Dublin missed an open goal from 2 yards out, which would have given Millwall a fantastic advantage, early into the 2nd half. The timing of John's strike meant that Millwall had virtually no time to reply and the game was over with Birmingham progressing with a 2-1 scoreline over the two legs. Birmingham meet Norwich in the final a week on Sunday.
