The Zambian-born midfielder brought some sanity back to the club saying to the Evening Leader: “Yes, it’s been difficult on times of late. We’ve had players’ wages being paid late and there’s been all sort of publicity about cash-flow problems and other stuff.
“Obviously, the lads were a bit upset about not getting their money on time, but when cash isn’t coming in through the turnstiles it must be very difficult to juggle the situation.”
 

Only 3,127 were at Wrexham’s last home game against Grimsby Town.

Whitley said: “Three thousand-odd isn’t brilliant, is it?
“We’d like to think we are worth a few more than that in view of where we are in the second division. We still have a hell of a chance of making the play-offs - but we could do with a bit more public support.
 

“I remember we made a poor start last season, but then we went on a great unbeaten run towards the end and we got automatic promotion. That was a nice feeling. It was lovely for the gaffer, too, after being relegated the previous season. I’d like to think more fans will look at our present league position and come along to support us. I’m sure we can go up again.

“Crowds would go up if we made it into the first division. Visiting teams would bring more fans to games at The Racecourse and who knows what that could lead to?
 

“The present squad of players have been together for quite a well now and there’s a certain amount of ‘bonding’ going on now. We all get on well and I can see that out on the pitch with players helping one another.
“Ideally, the players are trying to stay clear of the sort of publicity that seems to be rife at the club at the moment.
 

“We all know there are cash-flow problems, but it doesn’t make that situation any easier if people keep going on about it. The gaffer and ‘Rooster’ have been brilliant. They’ve done their best to keep our minds fully focused on why we’re all here - to play football.”
 

Jim Whitley and skipper Darren Ferguson are likely to be in midfield at Peterborough on Saturday. So is on fire Matty Crowell, whose excellent first league goal led to the 3-0 win over Grimsby. Chris Armstrong got the other two goals against the Mariners and he is also likely to continue up front with Chris Llewellyn.
