Liverpool striker Dirk Kuyt had a very unlucky return as main striker in the Holland team against Bulgaria yesterday. The 26-year old striker had to leave the field after only seven minutes when he slipped and injured his ankle.
The 26-year old was handed a first team spot after Ajax striker and Holland number nine Klaas-Jan Huntelaar got injured last week.
Kuyt's return lasted only seven minutes after he had to be replaced by young striker Ryan Babel.
"He tried to control a high ball and slipped because of the wet surface. He felt pain in his ankle and had to come off. It doesn't look good and tonight we'll know more about his situation." Stated Holland coach Marco van Basten.
Celtic striker Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink is currently unfit too and van Basten is considering to call up a replacement striker.
"We're are thinking of calling a replacement because of the injuries, but we're still thinking about that, we'll make a decision tonight."
Holland drew 1-1 against Bulgaria and are now topping the table together with Romania in group G of the Euro 2008 qualifiers.
