With Newcastle United ready to enter the competition this afternoon to FK ZTS Dubnica of Slovakia I thought it was time for a brief review of what happened yesterday.

First up were Newcastle’s expected semi final opponents Deportivo La Coruna who managed a narrow 1-0 at home to Slaven Belupo.

While possible final opponents Marseille hardly covered themselves in glory either with a 3-2 win against Young Boys in Switzerland.

Fellow French side Lens were denied a win with a last minute equaliser from Mirko Plantic to give Croatian side Varteks Varazdin a 1-1 draw.

But perhaps the biggest shock was for German giants Borussia Dortmund who were held at home by Sigma Olomouc, as Hamburg won Uniao Leiria 1-0 in Portugal.
