Dundee United manager Alex Smith has opened negotiations with Eoin Jess over a possible move to Tannadice.

The 31-year-old was one of a number of players released from their contract by the administrators called into Bradford City last month.

Smith said: "I have spoken to Jess's agent and we will have to see where we can go from here.

"The way I understand it is that Jess is well within his rights to move if he wants to.

"It's just a matter now of speaking to the player and trying to work out some sort of mutual package."

Jess' wages could prove to be a stumbling block to any deal after pocketing a healthy salary at Valley Parade, but the player maintains he is willing to make a return to Scotland to continue his career.

Jess said: "I think my agent has spoken to Alex Smith but I don't know what's happening yet.

"I just want to get things sorted out and concentrate on playing football.

"The Bradford thing might still work itself out. I don't know yet."
