Clarets cup run ended as holders City keep firm grip on the trophy. Burnley went where so many have gone before them as holders Manchester City cruised into the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.

City haven’t lost a tie in the competition since October, 2016 and kept their challenge to lift the trophy for a fourth season in a row firmly on course with a comfortable victory.

Goals from Raheem Sterling either side of half-time, as he finally got the better of inspired Burnley goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell, effectively ended the Clarets’ hopes of a first appearance in the quarter-finals since 2008/09.

And another from new signing Ferran Torres confirmed Burnley’s focus on the Premier League and the more pressing matter of looking for their first points at Newcastle United on Saturday.

Striker Ashley Barnes’ first appearance since New Year’s Day – playing for 70 minutes – and the return of defender James Tarkowski for the first time this season were big positives with that in mind.
