Arsene Wenger has announced his squad for the PSV game. The squad is listed below. It has rather a strange appearance. As it’s competition time what is strange about the Arsenal squad sheet?
A careful check of the sheet reveals something is missing:
1 Jens LEHMANN
4 Cesc FABREGAS
5 Kolo TOURE
6 Philippe SENDEROS
7 Tomas ROSICKY
8 Fredrik LJUNGBERG
9 Julio BAPTISTA
10 William GALLAS
13 Alexander HLEB
14 Thierry HENRY
15 DENILSON
16 Mathieu FLAMINI
19 GILBERTO
20 Johan DJOUROU
22 Gael CLICHY
24 Manuel ALMUNIA (GK)
25 Emmanuel ADEBAYOR
30 Jeremie ALIADIERE
That’s correct no regular right back. Both Hoyte and Eboue are injured. Hoyte should be back by the weekend. No prize yet though, you need to answer the question below for that. Wenger says he is considering Gallas or Djourou for the position. Apart from the right back situation there is plenty of strength for all the other positions. Diaby, Denilson and Walcott are all rested for Sunday’s game.
Arsenal have a good record against PSV, two wins and two draws. Apart from one away game, where Arsenal caught them cold winning 4-0, these are usually low scoring games. They might not be Blackburn, but they are not Barca either. Until this weekend PSV were in poor form, but they rarely lose at home (only twice this season).
We did hold them to a draw with nine men, when Paddy and Lauren were sent off, they then did actually try to attack, but Freddy’s towering presence in defence was too much for them.
They can be hard to break down, and are not famed for being adventurous. An away goal would come in handy.
Man to Watch: Leading scorer Farfan scored his 16th goal of the season at the weekend.
Man they may want to watch: In the 2002-03 Champions League group phase Gilberto found the back of the net after 20 seconds. Arsenal won that game 4-0 in Eindhoven through goals by Gilberto, Freddy and two from Thierry Henry. Everything went right that night – lightening doesn’t strike twice – does it?
To make sure it doesn’t PSV are promising to make it as hard as possible for the Gunners.
