Ratings v Man City

By GS1
September 22 2024

The game started badly with City dominating the early exchanges. Arsenal wrestled back control with a great Calafiori strike and a trademark setpiece goal from Gabriel. A moment of madness from Trossard (Or Michael Oliver depending on your viewpoint) left Arsenal with a 2:1 lead but with 10 men. A last minute goal from Stones meant the spoils were shared.

Raya 8 - Very good. Would have been a 9 if he tipped that shot over with his leg.

Timber 9 - Sorry Ben but you better start getting use to the bench. Absoulte class.
Saliba 9 - phenomenal
Gabriel 9 - Phenomenal
Calafiori 9 - Extra point for his goal. I said before we signed him if you have a chance to sign him you do it. He is going to be massive for us.

Rice 9 - Tireless. Blocked angles and ran his heart out. He is a Dm despite what some people on here might think.
Partey 9 - The old Partey. His best performance this season in terms of on the ball and off.

Saka 8 - Great deliveries and worked hard.
Trossard 0 - Let his teammates down. Absolute selfishness by this past it clown.
Martinelli 9- Best performance for some time. Ran about 14 km out there and was good on the ball in the firat half. This performance will have given him confidence. MOTM.

Havertz 9 - Unbelievable shift. Like Martinelli ran his heart out.

The ratings might seem high but I think they're deserving for what the players put in.

Not to sound like GS1, but I told you so.

Timber will start our next 4 games at right back. And Calafiori deserves to start too.

White was injured 80s but still came on!

Done dismiss White because he's sat down for one game.

If Timber is better than White we have a serious player on our hands

They'll all get games. Ben White is a great sqaud player.

Timber, Saliba Gabriel Calafiori is our best defence though.

I said it when he got here that he'll be our starting RB ahead of White.

Saka needs White.

Calafiori. Jury still out on his defensive side especially 1st half.
Got skinned for City's first goal.
It was really poor fullback play.

Nope.
White-Odegaard-Saka is our most potent attacking threat.

Timber will need time to integrate into that Triangle.
Good option though with White and Timber rotating.

Yes, the more games than Timber played together with Saka and Odegaard, the greater will the synergy be.

Plus, Timber is not fit enough to play 90+ minutes intense EPL game every week.
He still needed game time to build up his match sharpness to match White's.

Didn't learn anything new in that game

The thing I like (and also fear) about Calafiori is his absolute spunkiness. Can tell he has a big character, and as for City's first goal, I agree he was partly responsible but he is still integrating into our defense so he should get better as we go along. He more than redeemed himself IMO.

Its not a question. Timber is the future of that position. White is a great back up. And Calafiori is the future of the LB/LCB role.

Both of them can invert, it will give greater flexibility to Arteta on terms of which flank to use for attacks.

We need a Odegaard backup, Jesus replacement and Saka back up and we will be a force in Europe

Martinelli has had a great week. He's working so hard to find something and caused Walker a few problems.

Very impressed with him and he's not my favourite

@GS where is your rating for White who played 45 mins in defence (while injured)?!

I love our defence. Timber and Calafiori are amazing signings. We are so lucky to have the players we have back there.

Letโ€™s not get too carried away though. The defence was set up with 6 defenders in the second half lol

The real test will be when Timber/Calafiori are asked to to defend in 2 v 2 or 3 v 3 of 1 v 1 situations. Also can Timber contribute against lesser opposition the way White does in attack and be as good for Saka as White is?

I think he can for the record but letโ€™s see. We have a great squad of players there. Arteta loves White too so I think heโ€™ll be back in.

Timber was given stick on Twitter for a record of trying only 5 passes in the second half and not completing any. Obviously context important but just making the point that the defenders had huge huge protection and numbers back there and not asked to do anything else.

Iโ€™m delighted with the result as I thought we would be well beaten.

Raya 9 excellent. Heโ€™s so assured. Proving many people wrong about him. Motm for me. Heโ€™s a huge reason the defence looks so good due to his positioning, communication and calm.

Timber 8 excellent defending. Nullified Dokus threat which I think White may have found tougher.
Saliba 7 very good throughout. Was always where he needed to be and was safer with his passes than normal (in a good way). Not sure about him for Haaland goal.
Gabriel 8 Great goal. Extra point for the goal and his play after the Halaand goal but should have done better for that. Love how he doesnโ€™t back down from a fight either.
Calafiori 8 should have done better for their first too but his reaction and general play after that was too notice and what a goal.

Partey 8 thought he was excellent. Looks like heโ€™s getting some confidence in his body back as some of the turns with the ball and beating defenders where what we saw at Atleti.
Rice 7 I didnโ€™t notice r him too much actually but think he did ok

Havertz 7 ran around. Pressed well, battled well. Canโ€™t fault him really.

Trossard 2 not sure of the rating to give but my goodness that was poor. Not the refs fault at all.
Saka 7 extra point for the cross for the goal. Was glad arteta took him off at half time. Was worried he wouldnโ€™t because itโ€™s Saka but he was defo the right sub.
Martineli 8 Iโ€™m almost counting him as a defender. He was so so good. Battled hard, assist too!

Jesus 7 two great pieces of play against Bernardo silva.
White 8 part of that defence thatโ€™s so good. Assured throughout and playing with an injury. Didnโ€™t pot a foot wrong.
Lewis Skelly 7 got stuck in! Loved it.
Kiwior 7 solid too. Was worried when he came on as he hasnโ€™t played much but he did v well.

Loved Lewis-Skelly brought on in such circumstances - and did you see the little guy trying to get between Haaland and Gabriel - shows some courage

I think we have a good platform to build upon.

It's clear why Trossard made the arrogant celebration at Villa. Because of fans like Gunnersingh.

It's clear there is a vendetta against Trossard from GS. In the beginning he was blamed for not being an impact sub while players like Martinelli played 60mins and didn't score. Now Trossard scores and contributes to us being 3-2 up and he gets a zero rating.
The stats say we dominated the match and the eye test saw us pinned them back in the first 20mins. The stats don't suggest there was a problem with the midfield it suggested we got sucker punched but needed a third goal.

I am not interested in stat prodding and goal hangers.

What I care about more is good performances because that is a platform. Playing poorly and scoring is all well and good but is not sustainable but people will have to find out the hard way on here as normal.

Trossard is not a team player and is very very selfish.

I don't care if people agree or not because when I say make these kind of statements people always start agreeing.

Remember when I said Cech had lost his agility and bravery.

I was also the first to say Partey had lost his legs now everyone is agreeing with me.

The same thing will happen with Trossard mark my words!

A broken clock is right twice a day mate ๐Ÿ˜€. How is the 8 points behind City looking? How's Mudryk the generational talent looking? We all get things right and wrong.

How is Trossard stats padding? He scored the second goal. The Havertz goal against Bolton was stats padding.

We know you and BG don't like him. Many of us do like him because his end product is good.

That's fine. You can like him. I just don't like players who are selfish, slow and don't work hard. He also loses the majority of duals.

Playing poorly is not sustainable for a big club especially if you're not putting in a shift

Don't do that. If you think his level isn't the required quality for Arsenal, so be it but lets not add selfish and hard work to the list, because the manager plays him. These are the type of comments that gets me arguing with you. I believe Nwaneri is as slow as Trossard but I prefer Nwaneri to start ahead of him in the Odegaard role.
