A Hard Day's Night

Last night I met a real-life Victor Meldrew who moaned and groaned and moaned and groaned throughout the entire 90 minutes of Chelsea's battle to get into the knockout stages of the Champions League. Okay the game wasn't pretty and Chelsea weren't that good - but when Didier scored Chelsea's winner, Victor didn't even get up to cheer. Well he did eventually about a minute later.

One of the problems when you get 'displaced' from your usual seat as I was last night (my seat wasn't available due to TV coverage requirements) is that you have no clue who are you going to sit next to. Just my luck that I had a right moany old git next to me on my left.

How Scolari didn't consider this game to be an 'important game' is beyond me. It is obvious that Chelsea haven't schooled Big Phil in the ways of talking to the media and I think his pre-match comments dripped down to the players and certainly his comments affected the fans and ultimately the atmosphere.

It was a nervous night.

One eye on the game and the other on the progress of Bordeaux against Roma and so much so it took 40 minutes for Chelsea to have an effort on target and Kalou pounced onto a loose ball, after John Terry was bundled over in the area, and crashed it high into the net from about two yards.

Chelsea's night could have been made an awful lot more diffcult had Mikel not cleared away from the challenging Culio right under the crossbar from an Alcantara cross after 17 minutes.

Relief YES but could we push on.... NO!!

Kone equalised for Cluj and the seeds of doubt were sown again.

Drogba finally came on and after the magnificent Mikel broke up Cluj's possession in a congested midfield, he fed the ball out to Cole who chipped the ball over Cluj's defence for the on running Dids to control the ball and hit it underneath the diving body of Clano.

So Chelsea finished 2nd in Group A... eventually and their 2nd round opponents will be known on Friday 19th December when the draw is made.

One aspect of the 2nd round draw is certain, Chelsea will have to play the first leg at home.

Chelsea: Cech, Bosingwa, Alex, Terry (c), A Cole, Mikel (Bridge 87), J Cole (Belletti 73), Ballack, Deco, Kalou (Drogba 64), Anelka.

Goals: Kalou 39, Drogba 70

Booked: Belletti 75, Mikel 80

Cluj: Nuno Claro, Panin, Cadu (c), Alcantara, Alvaro Pereira, Dani, Muresan, Dubarbier (E Kone 59), Trica (Peralta 71), Juan Culio, Y Kone.

Goal: Kone 54

Booked: Trica 39, Juan Culio 90

Lol! It is a pain when you are next to an old misery guts - I often wonder if people like Victor use football as some kind of therapy where they can let all their moaning out in one big 90 min whack! We can all have a BIT of a moan but this bloke didnīt even acknowledge (or did so begrudgingly) the excellent goal by Drogba! Oh well...better luck next time!

I was a bit disappointed we didnīnt start with the 4-4-2 and then later when we did I think Big Phil told Anelka to play deeper - at one point it looked as if it was Dids and Joe up front!

First half we were poor - second half better and in control although not inspiring. Drogba had a point to prove and he seems to be on a bit of a mission - good news!

We will only get better now with Drogba now back and Carvalho not far off.

Now time for Big Phil to work on these plan B and Cīs.

He left a few mins before the end and left the woman he was with still sitting. As he got to the bottom of the stairs to the exit of the stand, he gestured her to follow him.

She didn't look to pleased. I reckon he is a control freak
