Closer and Closer and Closer and Closer.....

1-0 suggests an extremely close game. The game was far from that. WBA came to Stamford Bridge setup in a 4-3-3 with Kanu, (once a scorer of a fifteen minute hat-trick for the Arsenal at The Bridge), Kevin Campbell and Geoff Horsfield. Fair play to WBA and manager Bryan Robson for setting such a bold stance. In an end to end game chances were created and chances were scorned. The main culprits were Drogba and Lampard. Drogba on a better day could have had six, Lampard on even a better day by his high scoring standards could have had at least three. Damen Duff caused problems down one side, continually providing Drogba with excellent service. Duff must have kept on thinking to himself after every chance that Drogba wasted 'why do I bother?' Cole on the other flank was superb again, just as he was against Barcelona and again he kept on providing the chances that were sadly missed and missed in numbers.

WBA themselves caused Chelsea some scary moments, Kanu had a second half volley cleared by the impressive Huth (in for Carvalho) in that it was struck with such venom it almost took Huth's head off. In the first half WBA did have two goals disallowed, both from Horsfield and both were offside. Had WBA's final ball into the Chelsea penalty area been of better quality perhaps we could have been talking about a possible shock instead of reporting another Chelsea victory.

The only goal of the game came in the 26th minute. From midfield, Frank Lampard swept the ball out to Chelsea's left (attacking the Shed End), Damiem Duff took control and unchallenged strode into the WBA penalty area. Crossing a low hard ball into the path of Didier Drogba who from six yards out swept the ball into the centre of an unguarded goal.

Fair play to WBA. If they continue to perform the way they did at The Bridge, combining it with a performance and result that they got at Highbury, there is no reason why they cannot cause the jitters to the other clubs fighting against relegation.

Chelsea however need just sixteen points from their remaing nine games, of which five are at home against Palace, Birmingham, Arsenal, Fulham, and Charlton to be sure of clinching England major domestic honour, becoming the fourth different club to hold the Premiership title behind Man Utd, Arsenal and Blackburn Rovers.
