'We're gonna win the league. We're gonna win the league' came the cry from the jubilant Chelsea fans when goals number two and three went in.

The chant first came to the fore two weeks ago as Chelsea beat the Palace 4-1 and the chant was the first public airing of the belief that after fifty long years, the league title, now the Premiership title is on its way to Stamford Bridge. Pot hunter or die-hard, Chelsea fans have been suspicious for too long in being confident of any good and any trophies coming to Stamford Bridge. Many times when Chelsea have looked like championship material, many times have fans been disappointed. None more so than one season during Vialli's reign. Sitting in Crystal Palace's Selhurst Park stadium watching the boys beat Wimbledon, constantly the chant of ' We're gonna win the league' was sssshhhhhhhed down and so it was proved. The realism of the fans and the 'negativity' of the club to go on and prove the positivity of their ambitions always never to be realised, until now.

Chelsea are nine points away, or three wins from seven from winning the title. Although Arsenal beat Norwich, Man Utd surprisingly dropped points at home to Blackburn. After Chelsea's victory at Southampton Chelsea's lead is now thirteen points of both clubs with seven games to go. Chelsea's next three Premiership games are at home. Could it be possible that the title could be secured as early as 23rd April when Chelsea entertain Fulham? Wishful thinking perhaps, as Arsenal won against Norwich, who would have expected Man U to have dropped vital home points? In football as they say, anything can happen.

In a way it did happen at St Mary's. Although Chelsea's first goal scored by Super Frank, from a deflection off the big ears of Rory 'Dumbo' Delap, the free-kick from where the goal originated from was controversial. Kezman who was fouled by backing in, which he kept on doing all afternoon, and eventually was substituted before he was sent off later in the second half, the foul was harsh. The free kick itself was even more harsher as it took a wicked deflection on its way into the net, leaving Niemi travelling across his goal line the other way.

Chelsea's second was scored by Gudjohnsen after an industrious run by Johnson, in for the injured Ferreira. Johnson on his way beat off the attention of four red and white striped shirts, including Le Saux who took a wicked but missed hack as Johnson passed him by before Johnson fired a low hard cross before Eider took one touch and scored with a second shot just outside the six yard box.

Prior to Chelsea's second goal, Chelsea's lead could have easily have been increased first by a super save by Niemi who flew to his left with his feet to keep out a Lundkevam back pass and then from the resulting corner, Niemi saved brilliantly from a Huth low shot down to his left.

The second half was a slightly different story. Southampton finally realised that they could cause Chelsea problems by lobbing the long ball in for Peter Crouch at 6ft 7in to get a touch, although this tactic in a way caused the eventual Southampton goal more by Chelsea's lack of concentration than by Crouch's height, Huth in for Carvalho was outstanding and dealt with his Goliath like opponent in more ways than one. Southampton's goal by the way was scored by Phillips (the same Phillips whose wife was caught getting it on with a mobile phone salesman). Prior to his goal, Phillips did force Cech into his one serious save of the match tipping over a header from the former.

Chelsea's third goal eight minutes from time was a delight to behold. A succession of quick passes starting from a poor Southampton clearance led a dance of passes between Gudjohnsen, Lampard, Jarosik, Gudjohnsen, Drogba before Gudjohnsen fired into the bottom right of Niemi's net. Chelsea may not have shown consistent Champions elect class during the ninety minutes of this match, after all the International duty that the majority of the squad has shown these last couple of weeks, but the third goal showed that when that extra gear was needed, Chelsea certainly engaged that gear.

All that is required now is NINE points from seven games to be crowned Premiership Champions. The players know it, the manager and staff know it and the fans CERTAINLY know it.

WE'RE GONNA WIN THE LEAGUE, WE'RE GONNA WIN THE LEAGUE!
