Chelsea this afternoon secured their SECOND championship win in 100 years after a superb defensive performance at The Reebok Stadium defying a determined Bolton Wanderers side looking for their own glory in securing a UEFA Cup spot for the first time in their own history.
CHAMPIONS CHAMPIONS CHAMPIONS The hero of the day was Super Frank Lampard who scored twice in the second half towards the end where the 3,000 plus travelling Chelsea fans were housed and the celebrations at the final whistle were a joy to behold. Its alright for Man Utd and Arsenal and Blackburn fans who have held the coveted trophy in previous seasons, but unless you are a Chelsea fan and especially a fan in the modern day era or not born nor remember the last win in 1955 then you will have to excuse perhaps the 'over' celebrations being held tonight, tomorrow, next week, next month, next year. This title win under the leadership of Jose Mourinho, has to be the success story of any club in any part of the world that has seen a new manager take over in July 2004 and by the end of April 2005 (in his first season) taken the pinnacle trophy in the country of his employ. The other heroes of the day were John Terry and Petr Cech. Firstly a BIG up to Cech (who after his sensational save against Baros and Liverpool in midweek) produce another breathtaking near post save from a Geremi header from a Speed long throw not long after Chelsea had taken a one goal lead. There wasn't alot Geremi (a surprise inclusion at right back) could do as he challenged a long throw from Speed. The ball deflected from his head and was goal-bound until Cech dived to his right and pawed away the ball, in the process hitting his head against the post. Secondly, Captain Marvel John Terry superbly marshalled and dealt with the Bolton long ball assault. What balls past Terry and co were abley dealt with by Petr Cech who is simply brilliant. No wonder Cech is keeping Cudicini on the bench. Even with an 'impact' injury to his left eye at the end of the first half, JT was simply sensational value for his PFA Player's Player of the Year award which was awarded to him last Sunday. Super Frank Lampard. Two goals in the second half in the 60th and 76th minutes finally put paid to Bolton's own ambitions and desires and cemented Chelsea's first title win in 50 years. It looked that after the first five minutes that Frank would not be able to finish the game. After a hopeful shot that
Bolton caused Chelsea problems no doubt, especially in the first half and the surprise was JM only made two changes instead of the expected number that had been reported. In came Geremi for Glenn Johnson and Jarosik for Cole and they didn't let the side down. My only criticism is Didier Drogba's temperment and 'dying swan' act, but that is for another day.
Finally after a lifetime wait (especially for this correspondent) Chelsea have finally become Champions of England. If it takes another fifty years to achieve the same, then so be it........ but somehow I don't think it will take as long next time.
