They say that footballers are not the 'brightest stars in the sky' and in Richard Wright's case the statement is obviously true.
Tucked inside the goal where Wright was practicising before the FA Cup replay with Chelsea and where the Blue of Everton fans were housed, was a sign saying NOT to warm up in this goalmouth. So what does Wright do, clears a cross over the crossbar and falls back on the sign that says 'DO NOT WARM UP IN THIS GOALMOUTH,' does his ankle in and is out of the game. Everton already without Nigel Martyn had to call upon 22 year old 'rookie' Iain Turner for his first full game since November (when playing for Wycombe against Carlisle) and despite the youngster conceding four goals, he did not disgrace himself. David Moyes, I suspect felt a little stupid this morning, especially as he earlier remarked that the state of the Stamford Bridge pitch would be of more benefit to his Everton side than to Chelsea. Chelsea were in no mood to let the Blue half of Merseyside prevail after despatching the Red half only a few days earlier. By half-time Chelsea had raced into a three goal lead, with the pick of the goals being scored by Arjen Robben, after a fine ball to Crespo from Gudjohnsen who controlled it on his chest before laying a perfect pass for Robben to tuck the ball away beyond the outstretched Turner. Crespo got himself on the scoresheet with a header that was diverted past Turner from a Lampard free-kick. Super Frank himself scored from the penalty spot after SWP was brought down in the box after a dribbling mazy run. In between Chelsea raced through Everton's defence like a knife through hot butter, Turner was there a saved Everton from an 'Arsenal' type humiliation. Everton's solitary consolation goal came from the penalty spot from Arteta, after Huth (who had a great game) tried to impersonate his Captain and get away with it (snigger), by handling inside the area. Within minutes Super JT restored the three goal difference with a flashing shot past the helpless and blameless Turner, after a Huth free-kick had deflected from the Everton wall. A week on Sunday sees League One Colchester United enter the Stamford Bridge arena, in a game that I am really looking forward too, to fight for a place in the Quarter-Finals of the FA Cup. 40 YEARS A BLUE! COME ON CHELSEA!
