Tranmere play Oldham this week and its Ronnie Moore’s glorious return to Boundary Park. High flying Oldham are going strong under John Sheridan and Ronnie Moore will be looking to take the 3 points again and re-ignite our promotion hopes.
Rovers beat Oldham 1-0 in the first game of the season courtesy of a Chris Greenacre header. It was a scrappy game with Rovers just edging it. Many may remember it for the double sending off of 2 of Oldham’s players one for a tackle on Calvin Zola as he was adjudged to be the last man, and the other for kicking the ball at Zola while he was on the ground.
Last season, saw Rovers crush Oldham 4-0 thanks to 2 Greenacre goals and goals from Gareth Roberts and Ian Sharps. In the return leg Oldham had their revenge with a 1-0 win which saw Wellens scoring the only goal during the first half.
Oldham started this season poorly, with 5 losses in 7 games picking up just 4 points in the process. But after that John Sheridan got them winning games notably beating Forrest and Scunthorpe back to back. More recently Oldham have won 10 of their last 14 games leaving them in second place 3 points behind leaders Scunthorpe.
Much of the team that was assembled by Ronnie Moore have obviously been playing to their full potential but having managed most of them Ronnie Moore should surely know how they play and their weakness’ and strength’s giving him a tactical advantage if he chooses to use it.
Rovers have not won any of their last 6 games having drawn 4 and a win would be greatly appreciated by all Rovers fans, but its going to be a tough game with many players out to prove a point wearing white and blue shirts.
The good news is that Nottingham Forrest defender John Thompson has rejoined Tranmere for the rest of the year following his 1 month loan that was cut short By Colin Calderwood as it coincided with a great increase in Tranmere’s form and results. Lets hope he has the same effect tomorrow!
