Gareth ‘Edds’ to Tranmere as Moore’s First Signing

Former Milton Keynes Dons defender/midfielder Gareth Edds today signed for Rovers on a two-year deal after being a part of the Dons promotion winning squad in League Two last season. The 27-year old becomes Ronnie Moore's first summer signing and hopefully the first of a few.

Gareth ‘Edds’ to Tranmere as Moore’s First Signing

Tranmere have today made their first summer signing as defender/midfielder Gareth Edds joins the Club on a two-year contract after being released by Milton Keynes Dons following their promotion to League One at the end of the season.

Which position Edds has been signed to cover remains to be seen but he is able to operate in central midfield and at right-back as well as being a defensive option on the right side of midfield if necessary.

The 27 year old Australian, will be best known to Rovers' fans for his two goals that kept MK Dons in League One three seasons ago on the final day of the season against a Rovers side that were already safely secured in third place and the play-offs.

Edds, Gareth

The Dons won 2-1 that day to remain in League One for one more season before getting relegated but last season. Edds played just 11 times for Paul Ince's promotion winning side due to injury and was subsequently released at the end of the season.

Having been a trainee at Nottingham Forest and having also played for Swindon Town and Bradford City, Edds has spent most of his career at Milton Keynes prior to joining Rovers.

Whether or not he will replace Robbie Stockdale at right back or will replace one of Jennings or McLaren in midfield if either or both leave, Edds looks a good addition to the squad and Rovers' boss Ronnie Moore was delighted to sign him when speaking to the Official Tranmere Rovers Website.....

"I'm delighted to have signed Gareth. He's as comfortable at right back as he is in midfield, so his versatility will be very useful.

"Last season we missed having a box to box midfielder and Gareth will provide that.

"He is a hard working, quality player who is a good signing for the Club and I look forward to working with him.

"This is just the first signing of the summer and we are working at bringing more talented players to Prenton Park in the coming weeks."

Edds told Tranmere's Official Website................

"I'm happy to be at Tranmere.  They're a good team, did well last season and were unlucky not to get in the Play Offs.  They've got good ambitions and I want to be a part of them."

"There are good facilities here. I've played here before and always thought it was a good stadium.  I've got great memories from MK Dons but it was time to move on."

"I want to do new things and this was a fantastic place for me to come.  I've had a few good memories against Tranmere and scored a few goals, but let's hope I can score a few for Tranmere now."

"I always work hard and give 100% and hope the fans like what I bring.  I'll be giving everything I've got to help Tranmere try to get in the Championship.  I get around and I'll run all day. I can't wait to get started."

After doing research on him he sounds more of a right back. Good signing if you ask me, as Ronnie has stated on the website he's versatile which will be handy for us!

I have heard of him before anyway.

Amazing signing. I think he will be replacing Mullin AND a player who is very capable to play RB and can put presure on Holmes. I said we needed a player who wont mind warming the bench but can also come in and play RB if Holmes fails (because he is being bigged up by everyone I presume he is good).

Should be a good signing for the club, i think he is naturally a right back. He scored against us in 04/05 to keep them up.

I agree Mikey but you wouldn't think that what you said was true if you look at a certain other Rovers Message Board.

Well the players who have gone are Mullin, Stockdale and Johnstone and Jones. As far as we know he could be Mullin's replacement. That would be fine. Didn't MK have an amazing CM pairing last season who would get into most L1 sides? With a small squad, I think that getting in versatility with a couple of classy game changers is the way forward. I am very encouraged at this.

Just a bit of info for you:

He prefers central midfield, but can also operate at right-back or, at a push, on the right wing as a more defensive option. Season before last he was a very good industrious midfielder with a good shot on him (last minute goal kept us up against you lot as you may remember), but in pre-season this year he wasn't having a lot of impact at all, looked very slow (and like he'd put on a bit of weight) and then got injured for ages. Never got in the side this season due to injuries and he was pretty injury hit the season before that as well.

He can play right-back and is a solid option there, but is not exceptional and lacks pace as I said.

If you can get him fit and back to his best he'll be a reliable, versatile option for you.

Versatile and experienced player, I'm pleased with this signing. Pleasantly surprised is the way I'd describe myself when I read the text message.

In my opinion a bit of an unispiring singing, Il be hoping for better in the coming weeks. But I won't judge until the season starts.

Of course I did, because Gladiators is amazing and I wouldn't dream of missing an episode. The guy is my new hero, well he's not really, I'm just saying it for dramatic effect. He was quality, short but fast, light but strong. What a guy.

Running all day sounds funny!

I can imagine running from his car to the Players Entrance and then running round the dressing room, down the tunnel and out onto the pitch and then running back to his car again later!

Has anybody noticed that the picture in the article makes Edds look like Craig Bellamy when it's shrunk down

he has played something like 130 games in 4 seasons.

130
/
4
=
32.5

Only very rough but that shows that he is a consistant player for MK Dons. Take into account that he had ankle surgery last season and only played about 10 so the stats look even better.

Probably about 40 games for the 1st 3 seasons. Keep it in mind that they have a midfield pairing which would get into most teams in our league and I think he is a good aquisition. As far as we are aware, he could be Mullin's replacement. If that is so then it is very good.

Also you could say I suppose that the same definition of a player hardly playing could also apply to Steve Davies who has just moved to Derby.
