Wycombe born McLaren made his name for Luton Town in the 1990s, playing
for the club for seven years between 1994 and 2001, making 201
appearances and scoring six goals for the Kenilworth Road side.
In 2001 McLaren joined Sheffield Wednesday, where he had a three year spell before joining Rotherham in 2004, becoming a regular in the side over the next two years as he played 76 games in his two season stint at Millmoor.
After his contract expired with Rotherham, McLaren signed for Tranmere Rovers for the first year, signing a two-year deal with the club and becoming an important player during his second year at Prenton Park, finishing near the top of the assists table for League One.

The centre-midfielder took the majority of Tranmere's set pieces during the 2009/10 campaign, and could do so again this year.
