Turning the season around

What will it take to turn our season around? It seems a complex question but I suspect it isn’t. The indications are that there is one aspect of our play which is letting us down.

Arguably it is not defence. We have conceded 20 goals. That’s the same number as Chesterfield in 8th place. Our defence could be better and both Tom Davies and Jordan Turnbull have made schoolboy defensive errors, but defence isn’t our problem. There are 10 clubs who have let in more goals, we are average for the division and our league position is not down to our defence.

The real problem is scoring goals. Nobody has scored fewer goals than us. This is the main problem. Our strikers either can’t score, never score or aren’t being given the chance to score.

This is a conundrum. Before his injury last season Luke Norris was reasonably reliable, but since a series of injuries have suggested that Luke’s best days are behind him. Similarly, Kris Dennis has not put the ball in the back of the net frequently enough. At Carlisle he couldn’t stop scoring, at Rovers he has never got into the habit. Harvey Saunders has bags of energy but it stops there. Josh Davison has been given chances, but hasn’t really made an impression since joining in the summer. The remaining forwards, Taylor and Sol Solomon, are seen as being too inexperienced to make an impact.

It could be that our forwards just aren’t getting the service. Chances are not coming from out wide, from in the middle or from up in the air. The team appears to lack a continuous strategy and instead vary their approach from game to game. Injuries don’t help the situation but there is a sense that the constant chopping and changing means the team don’t settle in to a clear style. Omari Patrick missed the first half against Morecambe, and we played dreadfully. He has been our most consistent player since the start of the season, he was dropped because he wasn’t deemed to be making a big enough effort. That seems strange as Patrick has got back to defend and got forward to score goals. How much more effort is required?

It’s tempting to think all our problems will be solved by the January transfer window. There is an assumption that there will be money to spend. Then there’s an assumption that we will sign good quality players that will lift the team. The evidence from our summer signings suggest, with the exception of Patrick, suggests that not the case. In the summer we were advised we would only be able to have a smaller squad but with more quality. What we seem to have is a smaller team, the evidence of our League position indicates that the quality has yet to emerge.

Onwards and upwards then. We’re all in this together, let’s hope that the next few weeks sees improvements.

Dennis remains our best hope, (though possibly a forlorn one) of a scoring striker. He often makes good runs and gets himself into good positions but rarely receives the right pass. He has missed a few but he's never had much of a run and never had the service.

You are right about a goalscorer.
But I must add that the rest of the squad is also lacking in quality and talent.
And we have seen too much of the inadequacies of this lot.
And sometimes, with the starting eleven, the choice is not on current form or could it be pressure of who p!ays?
And to sum it up, the manager is still tinkering around with formation, shape, balance and tactics.
You have to wonder by the performances whether the players respond to it all?
The squad all round quality is not good enough to get a win against the bottom c!ub.
It is going to take a large investment in the January transfer window, to even attempt to stave off relegation. And until a takeover, it won't happen.
This is the worst squad I have seen in a white shirt for decades.

Unless there is investment we might take a loaner on if we can ship a couple out but beyond that i see no business being done unless the takeover happens in the next 3 weeks even then would they land on Friday and start signing players on Saturday, possibly not

getting players back that are injured and match fit will be a big turn around likes of Hendry and Walker as they controlled the midfield in a lot of games the back end of last season , getting the ball quickly to the wingers it give them a chance also I agree that Dennis looks like are best hope of as he makes runs nobody can pick out , would like to see him with Patrick or Saunders up front in a two ,dropping Jennings with Hawkes and Morris on the wings. also LOC over Norman

Can’t see the argument for Dennis. Against Morecambe he was anonymous, not helped I admit by being expected to act as a target man. He plainly isn’t one. If we’re going to score goals with the present group, I think our only option is to put the speedsters up front and play the ball through not up in the air.

I am very impressed that Jennings keeps putting a shift in , he’s an example to all the others.

Is Williams back as we have mainly midfield injuries so a good time to play him but of course this is Trfc so no word yet
We can persist with Jennings and Dennis up front for a couple of games but has to be in a 2 otherwise give Solomon or Taylor a chance next to Jenno and for 45 minutes a time for a few games with Saunders coming on to replace to give us fresh legs

Whats the obsession with Rovers fans about playing kids who aren't up to it when in a relegation fight. Any day of the week I'd play experience over enthusiasm in our situation. The wrong decisions or silly error's at the wrong times are not what we need.

It takes a lot of steel to play under pressure and whilst a couple if kids in the past maybe up to it you cant risk it, world of difference playing and winning each week throwing kids in to kicking and fighting at the bottom if the EFL

Taylors had a couple of run outs and last time was ineffectual he's not strong enough. Play them in games that don't matter, Cheshire Cup, pizza cup. Not 4th bottom v 3rd bottom.

In your opinion but kids get blooded in the premier league all th time
Williams has been a regular in a lesser league and has coped in the ‘month’ away in NLN and with some of our players described by fans as NL anyway then not much of a step up.How long till he is ready being spoon fed Cheshire Cups?Give him a chance doesn’t have to play him a full 90 minutes to prove a point that he’s not ready but MAYBE he is especially now we have injuries and poor form…

One difference I saw between ourselves and Morecombe on Tuesday was that they constantly crossed balls in. Now they may have a better left back than us, but we still cross it in so infrequently for my liking and there were Morecombe players busting a gut to get on the end of them. How many times have we seen a good cross in and nobody running into the box, or a mishit clearance by a defender and nobody is there to pounce. We play in league 2 for God's sake. There's no need to overcomplicate attacks. Defenders at this level have mistakes in them every game, hence why they play in league 2. Get the ball out wide quickly and whip balls in and have runners into the box and we'd see more goals go in. Both of wimbledon's goals were crosses, all 3 of crewe's were.

i think Wood is a decent crosser of the ball when he pushes up down the left...Our inept strikers never anticipate or work out where he delivers the ball.

The problem with a 'small' squad is you need players who aren't injured so frequently. Recruitment is key. It is no good Nigel now bemoaning the fact that he hasn't been able to field a settled side. In the past 10 to 20 years Tranmere have brought in 'talent' who spent more time injured than on the pitch.
I'm not sure if it is the players who are naturally injury prone or whether the training methods and requirements to run around a lot are to blame.

They do get blooded in the prem yes, which is why I said most kids, however putting one kid into a prem team and dropping 2 or 3 into a struggling side in a 4th division relegation battle is entirely different. Ultimately NA manages and coaches them and doesn't see anything they've done in training that would suggest they would take us forwards otherwise he would play them. And best on what ive seen of them for us I wouldn't play them either. One of the issues we have in my view is we keep taking players who've been released from Prem clubs, they are brought up differently and the game is different in 3rd and 4th Divison, its no surprise out best players are those who have not been through prem academies. The number of academy players is why we play static knock it round ball.

I’m curious as to what Nigel actually sees. I mean Patrick is pretty hard working but he gets dropped due to lack of effort. Kind of astounding.

I do think Patrick wasnt great last couple of games , but it must be tough when everyone else is really poor

What should we do with Williams then .
When should he be given a chance when I personally couldn’t trust any of the coaches especially NA judgement who has got us into this relegation scrap
Don’t bother signing potential talent if you squander the potential
He needs a chance in my opinion and not to warm the bench

It would be interesting to see what happens after the Ronnie Moore derby on Tuesday.

Like it or not, in the present situation a 70+ year old Moore is probably the only possibility of a decent caretaker we can afford whilst we await 70 million years for the takeover to happen.

NA has to hold his hands up now and admit he has failed: a great shame after the Apter inspired success of 12 months ago,

Nothing leave him out on loan, what does he offer differently to Merie, Finley, Hendry, Walker? Its not like he's a different type of player or big and strong. Soloman and Taylor yesterday showed the kids aren't up up to it , don't think Soloman touched the ball and Taylor picked it up once ran and someone and was lushed off the ball.

We sign them as they are cheap to pay and we take a gamble that we can sell them on,
