That dead bit of the summer

No football, no new signings, just waiting for the fixture list to come out. Welcome to the dead bit of the summer.
It’s two long weeks until the new fixture list appears. That’s when it becomes possible to plan the rest of your year. Holidays, birthday celebrations, induced labour and other life events. The worry of booking something now is that you do so and miss a mouthwatering fixture. Picking the wrong relatives to go to over Christmas could also mean a grumpy Boxing Day. Better to wait a couple of weeks.
There are games I’m looking forward to this season and some away matches I will think about. Shrewsbury, Chesterfield, Barrow and Barnet are all grounds I’ve not visited. I’ll probably think about Accrington, Cheltenham and Swindon too. It just depends when the games are and how the EFL sausage machine churns them out.
As for the home games I tend to look forward to the ones with a decent away following. I suspect only Oldham and Crewe are likely to bring significant numbers. There are some who will bring hardly any, particularly to Tuesday night games. Let’s hope that we play Colchester and Barnet on a Saturday.
None of this time of the year is about anticipating results. How can it be? We don’t yet know our full squad and can’t be certain if any of our contracted players will be snapped up by other teams. We will only really get to know what sort of season we are likely to have by the time the clocks go back. Most seem to think mid-table obscurity will be enough after the horrors of last season. Being a football romantic I’ll only settle for promotion, ideally as Champions winning every game.
Yet there are two full weeks before the fixtures are out, 7 weeks before the season starts, just over 49 sleeps. That cruel mistress football, we wait and things happen, but without it there’s not much is there?
