Achterberg - Injury Was At Worst Time Ever

Tranmere's first choice goalkeeper, John Achterberg, today admitted that his injury could severely damage his chances of getting his contract renewed. His current deal expires in the summer, but with Achterberg out he thinks he won't have enough time to earn a renewal.

Today, Rovers goalkeeper, John Achterberg, admitted his injury has come at the worst time possible, both with the Christmas period and with his contract expiring at the end of season.

Achterberg fears that because of his contract expiring soon, he won't be able to impress enough to earn his renewal. He believes that if he isnt back soon, then young goalkeeper, Russell Howarth might be ableto stake his place in the first team and replace Achterberg, who is desperate to stay an play for Tranmere.

The huge Dutchman sustained the injury in Tranmere's 6-1 defeat against Hull. Although he is angry at getting injured, he doesn't blame Hull striker Delroy Facey.

He said "He just fell on top of me so I don't think it was intentional, it's just very unfortunate. It is really frustrating, because my contract is running out and it's not a good time to get injured - but that's football.

Despite being out for an estimated six weeks, Achterberg still remains optimistic.

"The physio said it will be at least six weeks and I had been hoping to be back in four. With a bit of luck you don't know what will happen but you have to listen to your knee and you can't force it."

Achterberg has played a huge part in minding the net for Rovers and has only missed an incredible 8 games in the past 3 seasons, all due to suspension. John himself said he rarely gets injured but when he does its always at the wrong time. Sad to say it, but he has proved himself right.
