The glorious 12th heralds open season for anyone who wishes to take pot shots at pheasants. How lucky they are, poor Rafa has the British media taking pot shots what ever season it may be. The latest broadside from the press is, Rafas claims that Gareth Barry’s career be driven by money, not medals." Rafas throwing his toys out of the pram again" blah blah.
Liverpool courted Barry throughout last summer in a long drawn out saga. Villa quite rightly wanted top dollar for their prize asset after he declared he wanted champion's league football. With 10 years loyal service behind him even the most ardent of Villa fans could not begrudge their captain the chance to move on to finish his career at the highest level.
Twelve months on it seemed nailed on Barry would get his wish and join Liverpool, but his head be turned by Man City's Arabian gold. Liverpool cannot, and would not, try to compete with the £ 130 000 a week salary City have offered him, so City it is for Barry.
I ask why Barry asked to leave Villa in the first place? Was it not to play Champions League at the very highest level? Was it not to cement his position in the England team before a world cup? At 28 years of age it appears not, a very wealthy footballer simply wants more money.
Its his loss he has the rest of his life to count his pennies , he has three maybe four years left to play in Europe if he's lucky and City claim a top four place . That remains to be seen.

I suspect it was probably frustration that caused Rafa to have a bit of a dig at Barry, who strangely enough has not responded. Frustration from Rafa that he had spent at least a year trying to sign the player coupled with knowing that he would of been the ideal replacement for Alonso if/when he leaves this Summer.
Masch would be the bigger loss, I struggle to think of a better defensive midfield player. Will be interesting to see if Plessis can step up because he looked lightweight last pre season.
IF (God forbid!) liverpool lose to a poor Bolton side at the weekend then the pressure will really be on Rafa in certain papers and from the mouths of a few well known pundits and commentators.
