Golf? Sport Or Pastime?

As the summer crawls by we have other sports served up to us. Golf being one of them. I’ve always been intrigued by the amount of media coverage golf receives, more coverage than most. It’s classed as one of the nations "crown jewels" so the BBC crawls all over it on TV and radio.
I'm intrigued because is it really a sport? How can it claim to be a sport when two years running now men in their late fifties have come so close to winning? Sport at its highest level is for athletes. How many fifty year olds play top level football, rugby, cricket?
Now I'm not saying there is no skill involved but doesn't that apply to darts and crown green bowls as well? IMO, golf gets so much coverage because its the pastime of middle aged business executives who control our media.
Good luck to them for they have a nice social pastime to drift into their retirement. Sport it is not.
