Merseyside........Re-Branding

Long before Beatle mania thrust the worlds spotlight on Liverpool, the city was world renowned. From New York to Shanghai, Liverpool’s distinctive waterfront is as familiar to sea goers as the Statue of Liberty.

The majority of Britain's shipping lines were based in Liverpool. As a result their merchant fleets were all registered in Liverpool. Look at the Titanic movie, as her stern rises in her death throes Liverpool is emblazoned for all to see. Our merchant men set up little Liverpool's all over the globe. Liverpool bars still exist in many ports far from home.

The regions chamber of commerce and council leaders have at long last realised they have been missing a trick. When selling the region at trade fairs around the world Merseyside means nothing to someone in the Americas or Asia. Liverpool though, gets their attention.

Liverpool means ships, maritime history, Beatles, and of course the Mighty Reds. So a re-branding is likely to be called for.

Greater Liverpool or Liverpool Bay could well replace Merseyside in the near future, with a bit of ambition.
