You know, when your centre half crunches an opponent, knocks the stuffing out of him, the crowd roars its approval. A game can change on a great tackle; it can get the crowd going.
How many kids are turned away, told their not big enough? Our game is about winning, play your biggest strongest 13 year olds, that's how you win at school boy level.
Is it not surprising we have very few small gifted ball players? Is it not surprising we have big competitive strong players who can't live with a Messi but could put him row z?
Is it not surprising we don't win world cups?

argentina, italy and germany all have players who put their foot in. how can someone blame a young defender, who miss timed a challenge, for england not winning the world cup??? you mentioned Ajax when was the last time they ever won the world cup??
That general point has been made about English football for over twenty years. I think the culture is very slowly changing with the influx of foreign managers and players but it is a painfully slow process. And for the record, Shawcross-esque players are not going to cost England the World Cup, rubbish Goalkeepers will.
As long as we have the ex player pundits it will never change,Collymore is a dinosaur who lovesthe sound of his own claptrap,most of them are inane.
To answer your question Shawcross and his ilk are not to blame,he tackled in a reckless and dangerous manner,but frankly its his ability that is lacking for the big stage.
As long as our media and their so called experts overate and big up the English players we will continue to expect too much and be dissapointed
It is the media in general, not just the hack pundits like Collymore, that have a lot to answer for when it comes to the national side. Unfortunately the rubbish usually spouted in articles is often quoted as gospel by "the average man" and swiftly becomes national opinion. It is not reassuring to know the fate of the football side is influenced by the likes of Brian Woolnough and Oliver Holt!
