ROY HODGSON/ - Are you with us or against us?

By John Christie
July 5 2010

Civil war is the worst type of war. Since the arrival of Hicks and Gillette Liverpool Football Club has been plunged into a self destructive bitter war. The owners were stabbing knives into each others backs within weeks of their unholy, avaricious union.

As the club fractured into separate factions the manager entered the bitter feud.  Rafa was fighting for the club, the team, and the fans, his god is not money.  Rafa quickly tapped into the social psyche of the Kop. He knew he played a strong hand in the boardroom with its backing.  Only a withering chinese whispers agenda, played to the media, split the fans over Rafa, and led to his dismissal.

So Roy, with Rafas blood still wet on the boardroom carpet, are you with us or against us?  Back the club against the owners we will back you and support you all the way.

Play the patsy for them we will promise you a nightmarish ending to your managerial career.

I must agree whole heartedly with your ultimatum to Mr Hodgson.

I would have preferred King Kenny but I'm prepared to give him a chance as long as he is not a Hickletts poodle.

Roy has already said he wants a quick sale. What more can he do to make sure the club is sold quickly? FA. Allow him to manage and coach Liverpool FC in the mean time. Don't get in his back already! Get behind the manager and team no matter what the circumstances behind the scenes are.

in all my many years supporting Liverpool, the above statement/question is one of the most dispicable i have encountered to come from supposed 'fans'. specifically the threatening overtones at the end.

Roy, who incidently i am unsure of, has stated he wants a quick sale. he knows without this he woin't have the money to spend required to make us the force we should be.

Let us not, as LFC fans, tarnish or cheapen ourselves in a manner befitting the current custodians of our Great Club. It goes against the grain of our very ethic.

The negative/aggressive vibes people like you are putting about are so intense, that when the Yanks do go, where will you be channeling it? A player? the manager? other fans.

sort it out you embarrassment.

Do you really think life is that Black and White?
I am behind LFC because long after militants like you have crawled back under their rock the club will still be here, The problem is Hicks and Gillet even though they have officially stepped down from the day to day running's of the club and i use that term loosely! We must be behind the manager 100% with no ultimatums attached. What i have noticed over the past few years is that our supporters and not the club have been ridiculed by fellow fans for our lack of class in the face of adversity, When you think about it we don't exactly do as our anthem suggests, now do we?
Here is hoping that we can gain strength from this and get our dignity back and that my friend is not done by offering petulant ultimatum's.
Come on you Red's!

Is this article a joke?
You can't be serious mate.
You can't be serious.
Roy has alreayd said that He wants a quick sale.
What more can He do?
Roy is the BOSS, The Man In Charge: He has to focus on the team and Roy's job is trying to get out the best from his players and He must concentrate to keep the atmosphere at Melwood relaxed in order to do a good job for a team which desperately need of stability & organisation.
In addition, He possibily should sign one or two good players for the small senior teams with the limited resources of Paperone & ROckerduck.
Roy is an intelligent man & a good manager, and He knows well that his side needs harmony, confidence & stability and so He has just said his opinions about these unfair americans, bue He rightly prefers not be involved in the rally against owners.
So, Well done Boss, He lets the questions against yanks to the competence of fans.
As Manager Roy has a responsibility versus the team. & the players.

Issuing ultimatums is NOT the Liverpool way. You sound like a thug, a bloody hooligan. As much as I dislike Hicks and Gillett, you NEVER threaten a manager who is willing to serve our great club. Just because a person differs in opinion or agenda doesn't give you the right to issue threats. People like you degrade the club and it's glorious history. Liverpool fans used to conduct themselves in impeccable manner in the face of adversity. Shame on you. Putting such a threat on the internet with such a tone is NOT befitting a TRUE LIVERPOOL SUPPORTER. The key word here is support NOT threaten. Disgusting article and a disgrace to the club.

WTF are you lot on about? Roy Hodgson (it really hurts to think the King will actually have to answer to this man) was appointed by a Chelsea fan and a self serving banker, he has the right to know that if he becomes a patsy for the 'senior sources' he'll be treated far worse than the anti Rafa bunch treated Rafa. I for one have never booed a Red manager or player but that's because I knew every player and manager of the past was brought in because they were thought to be able to progress the club. This appointment has been brought about by everything that isn't and never has been The Liverpool Way. We exist to win trophies that's the Liverpool Way and I have seen no evidence whatsoever that Roy Hodgson is a man that can progress this club on that front.

I'm willing to give Hodgson my support because he is now our manager, but I'm completely underwhelmed and would like to know just what the guy has done to be promoted to such a high position as manager of Liverpool FC.

Okay, this is a badly worded article, and title, but don't expect everyone to blindly get behind Roy simply because he's been installed as our manager. There are real fans that quite rightly question his appointment on many levels least of all his lack of silverware. And like it or not he has been appointed by Purslow and Broughton, who in turn are there to answer to Hicks and Gillett. There is a real fear that Roy (nice man that he is) will put up with a meagre transfer kitty, will not fight the owners if they want to sell our best players. He is an outsider who wanted the “big job” and he got it. I can guess why Kenny never got the job because as Martin Samuel and Rory Smith said, “He’d be a right pain in the @#$%& to the owners.” But someone like Dalgliesh would have been fighting for what’s best for us from inside the club. Somehow I don’t see Roy ever doing that.

So I would have doubts about Roy’s ability and motives.
Ask yourselves this question: Could you unquestioningly work for two odious backsliding @#$%& as Hicks and Gillett, especially if you didn’t need to? If the answer is yes then you too have questionable morals…

None of us on the Kop are going to boo Roy. We will say nothing until he reveals where he stands on “critical issues”. His first interview didn’t inspire me though (side-stepping talk of transfer budgets). So you lot, don’t expect us to blindly accept his appointment, as (like it or not), it indicates a lack of ambition and is a potent symbol of the shambles our club has become. A massive section of the fan-base are not that gullible to be forced into believing Hodgson’s appointment is good for Liverpool, because it’s not – It’s a Hicks and Gillett appointment, and not even the best of a bad job. So knowing this, why you expect us all to be “singing from the rafters” for Roy is beyond me… And I say that as a fanatic of fifty years, with umpteen European away games attended and having only missed a total of 37 games in all of that time…

And to take your analogy of getting behind the manager “no matter what” to a “mad extreme” That’s like expecting all Germans around in 1939 to get behind Hitler simply because he was the “head” of their country, whether they agreed with him or not… Fan loyalty is commendable in lots of circumstances, but this is not the Liverpool we all know and love… So for me, all of that expectancy goes right out of the window while the Yanks are still in charge. Don’t ask or expect me to get behind something I have “absolutely” no belief in. And that’s the present setup and hierarchy of our football club.

1) Silverware of a manager largely depends on level of the CLub, financial resources, level of the team.
Roy Hodgson never manager a Top CLub, although He largely and undoubtably deserves the chance to manage a Top CLub.
Benitez trained one of the fantastic indipendent players complex of spanish football, composed by fantastic players like ANgulo, Marchena, Claudio Lopez, Joaquim, Carboni, Ayala: a strong team ineherited from Hector Couper. Valencia were one of the Top European Club in that historic moment: Valencia destroyed Lazio in CL quarter final, Valencia reached CL final, two times front-runners under the guide of Hector Couper. I DO NOT WANT TO HIDE THE GREATNESS OF RAFA, BUT CLUBS AND PLAYERS MAKE FORTUNES OF THE MANAGER.
2) It's impossible to define a manager by silverwares: under this perspective "SIlverwares = Potential Liverpool Manager", plenty of fantastic Man Who make the history & creating dreams like Shankly, Paisley, Fagan, Brian Clough They never never never had only one chance to prove his best values at highest level.
3) Regarding to resources, levels of the Club, players, Roy Hodgson reached achievements as fantastic as Rafa's silverwares.
4) Roy is working to persuade Gerro & Torres to stay in any possible way.
Players often decides to leave Club, it's a question of personal decisions, and too many times these decisions are out of the control of a manager, especially a manager appointed last week: If Gerro & Torres decide that's time to go, it won't the faulth of Mister Roy.
5) Mister Roy is only focusing on pitch problems and IT'S THE ONLY THING WHICH I EXPECT FROM THE BOSS.
QUESTIONS REGARDING OUR UNFAIR OWNERSHIP IT'S OUR PROBLEM.
THE FANS MUST PUSH UP THE PRESSURE ON AMERICANS, NOT THE BOSS.
6) WE MUST GET BEHIND THE MANAGER, BECAUSE HE NEEDS SUPPORT.

During the time of Ernesto Pellegrini's regime, Inter Milan doesn't match, in terms of financial power % resources, the actual of the Chairman Massimo Moratty, Tycoon of Italian Oil.
Although limited resources, ROy Hodgson headed a CLub involved in the battle for avoiding relegation (Inter Milan) to 7th & 2th place in a table, reaching also an Uefa Cup FInals, (Inter lost to penalty kicks against Shalke 04).
I'm italian and I know well Serie A's history.
Hodgson never worked under Masssimo Moratti's regime.

Like carra and ejs I too have been a fan for many decades. I've been to many finals and great European matches. I've seen them win titles and lose them, and never, ever booed a player or manager. Liverpool Football Club owe me nothing but I'm damned if I'll stand idly by while a Chelsea fan and a (w)banker run the club in to the ground. And I'm damned if I'll have anyone telling me I'm not a real fan.

As far as I'm concerned getting rid of Rafa Benitez and appointing a third rate manager like Roy Hodgson was just another step towards their goal, and I don't give a flying one if Hodgson is a nice man and a media darling, if he stands by grinning while Gerrard and Torres are sold he can go f*** himself, he won't get any support from me.

But..........for now I'll support him, he has a very short leash though, something I've never done with a Reds manager in my life.

I for one am made up at Hodgson's appointment. Great to see not only a British manager in charge, but also a VERY GOOD manager in charge.
He has experience at both club level home and abroad and internationally.

What would Shankly and Paisley have thought, if they were never given the chance and instead we turned to foreign managers every time?
Who were the other names in the frame besides Kenny? Pellergini? spent millions and won what? And would he have spoken out against the yanks?

You got to remember Roy has just been employed by these men. Yes he wants the sale but he's just been here a week so got to be careful what he shouts off about. His first interview was good and he spoke of the "biggest" club job in football.

To call him a lap dog for the yanks is a cheap insult and an insult that could have been aimed at anyone who took charge.

Will he be a success or not, who knows? But that can be said for every candidate and also back when Shanks took charge.

Roy just like Rafa did will have his hands tied regarding transfers etc so lets not burden him with more to worry about.

Whilst mentioning Rafa, I wasn't on the "Rafa out" bandwagon but could see his time had come. I don't buy or read papers so they can never persuade me but for me Rafa's faults lay, not with the transfers he couldn't get, but with the players we had. Yosi a prime example. A bit part player for us (god knows why) yet the chavs snap him up, while Lucas plods on.

The Liverpool way was never to sell the club off, import managers, or spend millions on top names.
It was and IS to give full support.

Roy, all the best and make us proud again.

We have to agree to disagree then Cap.

I don't see Hodgson as a very good manager, I see him as a good mid table manager, and one at 62 couldn't refuse the offer of being manager of one of the top clubs in the world. The fact that the King thought he was better than any on the short list speaks volumes and he's a friend of Hodgson.

When Shanks was hired we were languishing in the 2nd division, he didn't have to get us to the top, he didn't have to win the FA Cup, he only had to keep us in the 2nd and get promotion at some point. That he went on to build a dynasty was something extra.

Bob Paisley was promoted from within for good reason, he'd been here for most of his life, knew everything about the club from top to bottom and, as Shanks fortold, was a fantastically great manager to boot, as he went on to prove. It was his first and only job in management, he hadn't been all around the world managing in third rate leagues and then when he's ready for his pension go to a big club and do what? He's too old to build from scratch. FFS, wasn't it only a season or so ago when he was sucking up to pissy pants by accepting defeat before they'd even played?

About Rafa, no offence Cap but Hodgson isn't even on the same planet. There's a reason the King advised against sacking Rafa, and there's a reason he put himself forward ahead of the short list.

I really don't want a manager who is great friends with pissy pants, nor one who pissy pants condescendingly says is a great appointment. I don't want a media darling of the press, I want one like Rafa, Like Kenny and like Shanks who use the press to their own good and couldn't give a flying one whether they're liked or not.......well anyway, I hope he proves my doubts wrong.

He'll get my support though, for now anyway.

Ibelieve Roys job will be to steady the ship, keep us in mid table out of harms way .Untill new owners show up ,wether it be months or a year .Thats the reality of our situation ,mid table mediocratity becons for the forseeable future .No big name manager ,or young coach would touch us ,we are a poisoned bankrupt chalice. We will back him our fight is with the owners not Roy Hodgson .Its very hard to ride two horses with one ar$e ,especially at 62 years of age .

Kate, my point is, who would have known what Shanks, Paisley or Kenny could do as managers unless they were given the chance?

As you mentioned, it was Paisley's first job in management. Not even Shanks could have known he'd go on to be a great manager.
And as for Shanks himself, you prove my point. He wasn't expected to perform miracles but did. Would a "no body" British manager be given the chance in this day and age?

I too would want a manager who loathes manure etc, etc, but thats not really the main point.

I do see Hodgson as a good manager. Plying his trade in several different countries is hardly a fault. He has knowledge of European players as well as British. Something some of the foreign names mentioned for the job didn't have.

Not sure how he's not on the same planet as Rafa. Is that because of the Champions League win and final?

Every Red should give him the same support and understanding that Rafa had regarding transfers etc. His budget will be no bigger.

I just hope that he plays the better players and don't play for the draw first.

As I said at the beginning Cap, we'll have to agree to disagree. I always respect your opinion though.

Roy Hodgson is too old to pull up any trees, those other men were in their prime but hey, let's hope he proves me wrong. Unfortunately the only way he can do that is by winning the league because I see last season as a blip. We had so many things go wrong in the first 4 or 5 months of the season that we were fighting a losing battle from day one. Rafa would have controlled all of that this season and we'd have been back up challenging if he could have kept the same squad together with a few additions.

I wish Hodgson the best of luck as he is manager of 'my' club but hand on heart, his appointment is underwhelming and smacks of having been done just as much for non-footballing reasons as it does about getting Liverpool back on its feet.
You are not going to see Hodgson comment on the owners/board the way Rafa did because Hodgson is not that sort of spikey character and I think that is part of the reason why he was appointed.
It is going to take a fair bit for him to win over a sizeable section of the clubs fans but I am behind him and wish him every success because without major investment to bring in the 3-4 top players Liverpool need, he is going to need every scrap of luck he can find.
