Germany 1 England 5, 10 Years On

Ten years ago today, in Munich, a young England team stunned the world with the thrashing of Germany.  

Despite falling a goal behind early on, a hat-trick by Owen, and a couple from his Liverpool team mates Gerrard and Heskey, made it a night none of us will forget. 

It was Owen who naturally grabbed the headlines, but it was Gerrard’s and Scholes’ midfield domination that really won the game.  Gerrard was able to terrorise the Germans, given free reign by Scholes. 

Now ten years on Gerrard indeed did fulfill his midfield dominating attacking role with Liverpool, but never with England.  His ability to play anywhere on the pitch led him to be shunted around to accommodate other players.  

Scholes retired early from the international scene as his place was never valued by a succession of media led managers.  It was to England’s great loss that the team was never built around Gerrard, never allowing him the free role he craved.
