Motherwell manager Terry Butcher was delighted with the under - 21's 3 - 0 win over a full strenth Arbroath side.
The first half was even but just after the break Kenny Wright slipped the ball past the stranded Tony Mitchell. 10 minutes later, he turned provider supplying a fine cross into the path of Andy Scott who headed it past
Mitchell to send us 2 up. We completed the scoring in the 85th minute when Wright scored his second of the night from close range.
After the match Terry said " I'm delighted with the result and the boys played very well. Arbroath had a lot of good young players on show but so did we. "
Arbroath manager John Brownlie said " Full credit to the young Motherwell lads but I think all three of their goals were avoidable and were down to defensive errors on our part. "
Motherwell played a trialist in the match, freed Celtic goalkeeper Barry John Corr. The 22 year old who spent six seasons with the Parkhead side kept a clean sheet at Gayfield and is desperate to play again after a year out through injury. The keeper has played under Motherwell coach Chris McCart when both of them were at Celtic.
