Hearts striker Mark De Vries has revealed he almost joined Motherwell after Rob Mattaei approached him about a possible move.

Rob Mattaei who once famously stated that he wanted to punch Billy Davies had tried to convince the Surinam born striker that he should try his luck at Fir Park when he was only 20.

De Vries had played beside the former Motherwell defender at Dutch club Vollendam before Mattaei joining Harri Kappman at Fir Park.

De Vries told the News of the World " He tried to get me over to Motherwell but it didn't work out in the end. I also asked his advice before coming to Scotland and joining Hearts. "
