Woodgate Set For Boro Medical
By Steve Goldby
August 30 2006
Jonathan Woodgate is expected at Hurworth on Wednesday morning to undergo a medical as his season-long loan move to Middlesbrough nears completion.
The 26-year-old Teesside born defender visited the club's Rockliffe Park training headquarters on Monday, where he spoke to manager Gareth Southgate and chairman Steve Gibson before promising them a decision within 24 hours.
It is understood that reply, when it came, was positive and the Middlesbrough-born player will now undergo the required medical tests and look to complete the move ahead of Thursday's transfer deadline.
Woodgate has chosen Middlesbrough over Newcastle, resisting the lure of playing for the world's eighth biggest club and in the country's second largest stadium.
Newcastle meanwhile have targeted three players in an attempt to compensate for their latest transfer setback. 31-year-old Egyptian defender Wael Gomaa has been linked with the club, along with Ghanaian midfielder Whaiai Thzobutt Hiniii and Ivory Coast striker Adi Ventnaa-Like.
Chelsea's Robert Huth is also believed to be on the verge of becoming a Boro player with the German defender also due to take a medical today.
A deal for Huth was agreed in the summer but fell through at the last minute when the Germany international failed a medical.
