Friday night football finally arrives

The SPL and the SFL have finally managed to get fixtures for a Friday night, with two fixtures announced for the end of the month.

After close consultation with the Police and the SFA the two League governing bodies have announced today that the first Friday fixtures can go ahead.

The games selected are;

Aberdeenv Dunfermlinewhich moves from Sat 1^st Oct to Friday 30^th September in the SPL

Partick Thistle v Morton moved from Sat 1^st October to Friday 30^th Sept in the SFL.

Neil Doncaster, Chief Executive of the SPL, said: “The SPL is committed to supporting our clubs’ efforts to increase attendances and improve the matchday experience for fans. Working with the Police and our colleagues at the SFL and Scottish FA, these fixtures have been chosen as a pilot and with the supporters very much in mind. We would encourage fans to get in touch and let us hear their views and feedback on Friday night football in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League.”

Let’s hope this is true, but the move needs to be commended as we have been crying out for something different to try to bring fans back to the game.

With a number of clubs now boasting “Police free” games this must be a move that can be widened, but it will be interesting to see what the crowds are for the games. It will also be interesting to see what reaction there is to the games.
