Friday night football hits Scotland

Scotland’s experiment with Friday night football appears to have been a success unless you follow Dunfermline or Morton!!

Two games were finally played on a Friday night inScotlandto test the water if there was a market for a move away from Saturday. In the SPL Dunfermline, controversially, travelled toAberdeen, and Morton made the slightly shorter journey from Greenock toGlasgowto take on Partick Thistle.

The controversy surrounding theAberdeengame was fuelled mainly by the Pars who didn’t want their fans having to travel north on a Friday night. That didn’t seem to deter too many as the game drew a crowd of 8333, this is comparable with anything the Dons have been attracting recently.

Down at Firhill the game with Morton drew in 3380, the biggest at home for Thistle this season. This shows there is some merit in the experiment and should be repeated across the country. In the SPL a fixture involving Motherwell or Killie or St. Mirren OR St. Johnstone vDunfermlinewould work.

Both sets of home fans were well rewarded for turning up as their sides ran up their biggest wins of the season.

At Pittodrie a Scott Vernon hat trick and a Fraser Fyvie goal were enough to see off a hapless Pars side and take some of the pressure off the beleaguered Craig Brown.

Down at Firhill, Thistle rattled five past league leaders Morton, thanks to goals from O’Donnell, Doolan, Erskine, Stewart and Elliot.

There is no truth that both Thistle andAberdeenhave requested to have all their games played on a Friday!!
