Boro legend George Hardwick stars in new book

The life of Boro legend George Hardwick is featured in a new book, The Stokesley Scene Collection due for publication in September 2008. Visitors to Middlesbrough’s Riverside Stadium will be familiar with George’s statue standing proudly next to that of Wilf Mannion and the Ayresome Park Gates.
They may not be fully aware of the extent of his achievements as captain of Middlesbrough, Oldham, England and a Great Britain football team, and later manager of Sunderland and the Dutch national side among others. George sadly died aged 84 in 2004. He was originally interviewed by Andrew Grass and Peter Hallworth, then teenage schoolboys, for the Stokesley Scene community magazine. This was in 1979, with the magazine having been launched in 1978.The magazine issues have been collated for a 30th anniversary book, The Stokesley Scene Collection. Peter has revisited his original story and brought it up-to-date with the help of George’s widow Jennifer, the staff of the George Hardwick Foundation and Middlesbrough Football Club.
The resulting article, illustrated with photographs from George Hardwick’s life and career, together with photographs of the team at the George Hardwick Foundation, provides a fitting tribute to a Boro star and Stokesley resident.
