Hull v Villa report

Hull welcomed Aston Villa to the Kc stadium having lost their last 2 games. Villa on the other hand hadn't lost in their last 7 league games. Hull needed something from the game to restore confidence after the two heavy defeats to Sunderland and Manchester City.

Hull started the game the brightest and looked confident. Hull had the ball in the net on 6 minutes but the goal didn't stand as Nick Barmby was adjudged to have fouled Brad Freidel. Villa then enjoyed some good pressure and forced a few corners which Hull were able to deal with. On 13 minutes Villa had their 1st chance, Gareth Barry firing over. Defences were on top in the 1st half and neither side could create any real chances the half ended 0-0.

Hull started the second half brightly as their did the 1st half, Richard Garcia sending a header wide from a corner.  The only chance Villa had was when Petrov sent a shot wide, a shot which he believed took a deflection, He was booked for his protests. The second half was like the 1st and was pretty much uneventful. With 10 minutes to go the game looked to be heading for a draw, a result I think many would agree would've been a fair one. However with only 2 minutes remaining Ashley Young sent in a low cross which Kamil Zayatte sent into his own net. 1-0 Aston Villa, how unlucky for Hull.

Hull looked to be heading for their third defeat on the bounce with 4 minutes added on Hull tried to push forward for an equaliser. In the third minute of injury time  Hull though their had an opportunity to get level when a corner came in it was headed onto the bar and over ,but referee Steve Bennett though Ashley young had handled it and pointed to the spot. He then decided to consult his linesmen and decided it wasn't a penalty but a goal kick. With that went Hull's last chance and the game ended 1-0 to Aston Villa. The result leaves Hull in 8th with only 1 win in 11 . Aston Villa are now Back up to 4th. 

Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill on the late penalty drama:
"It wasn't a penalty.

"I'm delighted the right decision has been made and pleased we've won.

"We didn't play well, we struggled to create things but we just keep putting pressure on the sides around us."

Hull boss Phil Brown on the same incident:
"It's a tough one. The referee got it wrong because he gave it originally.

"The linesman took up a position that he was giving the penalty but for some reason they've changed their mind between them.

"The referee is 15 yards away but he consults a linesman who was 40 yards away from the incident."
