By Tiger Tim
January 15 2009
Hull made it into the 4th round of the FA for the 1st time in 20 years after beating Newcastle 1-0 at St James park in their 3rd round replay. It was Newcastle who did all the Early Pressing and should have been leading by Half time, young Spanish forward Xisco sending a header wide after 13 minutes.
It was a game a few Chances for either side but the Spanish Striker Xisco was having the best, on 16 minutes he sent a shot over. Nicky Butt had the best chance of the 1st half Sending a header against the Bar. A major flash point came in the game when both managers squared up on the touch line after a challenge on Cousin by Coloccini, the square up ended in both managers been sent to the stands.
Newcastle continued to Press despite the absence of Joe kinnear on the Touchline, Michael Owen sending a shot wide. Hull finally had their 1st shot at goal in the 45th minute but Nathan Doyle sent his shot wide. The 1st half ended 0-0 but just like in the 1st tie Newcastle should have been 2 or 3 goals up.
Newcastle Began the second half full of Confidence and were the ones having the chances. Michael Owen going one on one with Matt Duke but the Hull keeper turned the ball around the post for a corner. From the resulting Corner Xisco sent another Header over. David Edgar had a chance on 53 minutes but he couldn't covert his header goal wards. Hull then had a few chances of their own 1st Zayatte having a header which given had covered and then Craig Fagan having a shot which again Given had covered.
George Boateng had to be taken off on a stretcher for Hull just after the hour mark the injury looked quite serious, Ian Ashbee came on to replace him. Hull then got the breakthrough on 81 minutes Daniel Cousin scoring the goal. Hull hadn't really been in the game but Newcastle's failure to covert any of their chances meant Hull gained the lead. As the game entered the final 5 minutes Newcastle piled on the Pressure and had 3 chances to get an equalizer, 1st an header from Michael Owen which went over then a Shot from Lua Lua which went wide then a free-kick which was blazed over by Danny Guthrie. With that the game ended 1-0 and Hull were into the 4th round for the 1st time in 20 years.
Hull now face Millwall at the KC Stadium on January 26th kick off is at 3pm
Manager Views
Hull manager Phil Brown:
"It was all about the result and not the performance, and we got the result.
"People said that with eight changes you've gone and thrown the chance to play Millwall at home. But we don't set out to lose games.
"The lads have restored a bit of belief in the camp with
regards to winning games at this level. We've kept a clean sheet
against them and gone on to deservedly win."
Newcastle boss Joe Kinnear:
"Hugely frustrating but I
can't criticise the players, we had 11 missing. I really should be
sitting here talking about us winning by four clear goals.
"They had a smash-and-grab at the end. Here we are out of the FA Cup and bitterly disappointed, but not with the performance.
"Phil Brown and I just exchanged words. He instigated it and I answered him back. But we will have to wait and see what the referee's explanation is."
