Match Report: Stockport County v. Yeovil Town

After the Easter Monday loss to Leeds United, Yeovil responded with a convincing 3-1 win over Stockport County- a result which relegated the club to the bottom tier of English Football.

Terry Skiverton made one change to the side which lost to Leeds, recalling Andy Welsh to the starting line up instead of Scott Davies, who was dropped from the squad completely.

As discovered in the Easter Monday game, Gavin Williams was offered an almost free role, where he struck up a good partnership with Dean Bowditch.

The partnership paid off after just 20 minutes, when Andy Welsh's free kick wasn't cleared, and loanee Williams threaded the ball through to Dean Bowditch who stabbed home from close range. 0-1.

The Glovers never really produced fluent football, something mostly blamed on the awful pitch at Stockport.

Ex-Glover David Poole looked most likely for Stockport, who seemed deflated by the Yeovil goal.

Things soon got worst for County, when a Nathan Smith long throw-in again wasn't sufficiently cleared and after some head tennis, Gavin Williams lashed the ball in from just inside the box. 0-2.

Just before half time Steven Caulker nearly scored his first senior goal but his header was saved directly on the goal by Fon Williams.

Half Time: Stockport County 

The second half became formality for the Glovers, who were happy to retain their 2-0 lead, whilst Stockport lacked any attacking incentive. 

But the Glovers added a third goal when Aidan Downes found space down the left hand side before crossing to Gavin Williams, who glanced a header into the bottom left hand corner of the goal, doubling his tally for the game. 0-3.

Yeovil were comfortable from then but did concede a goal on the 80th minute when yet another set piece wasn't dealt with by Yeovil, so George Donnely smashed it home as a mere consolation. 1-3.

The game finished 3-1 to the Glovers, marking just their 3rd away win of the season. Terry Skiverton would have been pleased with his sides response after the defeat to Leeds, and will hope it can continue to the Tuesday night game against Milwall.
