Boyle – It’s the Old Firm to blame.

Motherwell owner John Boyle took the opportunity of a Live Sky game to sound off about the process of SPL reconstruction.

His first, of two points aired on Sky Sports News, is an attempt to stop playing in December and January, by starting the season in July. This will prevent days (or nights) where people are being asked to sit in below zero temperatures. This is one of the major reasons for “paltry” crowds.

He blames the lack of desire for this change on the Old Firm who he believes would rather be playing pre-season games abroad or at venues such as the Emirates or Wembley.

His second point was around the distribution of wealth in the League, he believes the money needs to drip down a bit further to allow there to be greater competition in the League. Motherwell, he said, do not have any preconceptions about the size of the League.

Rather than worry about the size of the League Boyle wants these two points addressed and I would probably have to agree with him.

Times have changed, no one wants to sit in freezing temperatures in the 21st Century therefore a two month shut down could be a good idea. Although personally, I wouldn’t object to going the whole hog and playing from March to November.

I also think he has a point with the re-distribution of the money in the game, but unless others stand up to the Big Two this won’t change either. I am fed up with their fans telling us we need them to survive, equally they need us to have a League to play in as no one else wants them.

More power to your elbow Mr Boyle!!
