Stephen Craigan’s Testimonial events come to a climax tonight when current side Motherwell take on his only other senior side Partick Thistle.
Craigan first signed for Motherwell back in 1994 when Alex McLeish was in charge and stayed for six years before Billy Davies released him. Craigan then moved to Firhill to join Thistle who were then in the Second Division.
Two years later they were in the SPL after two straight promotions aided and abetted by their new centre back. He also helped them to stay in the SPL in that first season.
This attracted the interest of Motherwell boss Terry Butcher who wanted to bring in a bit of experience to his young side and at the same time weaken one his competitors at the bottom of the SPL.
Therefore Craigan returned to Fir Park in the summer of 2003 and quickly established himself as a key player which he has remained ever since.
He has also become a mainstay of his country’s International side, with over 50 caps for Northern Ireland to add to his 350 plus games for Motherwell.
Craigan deserves this award tonight, he has always given 100% for the club. Sometimes it doesn’t always work out for him but he will always be prepared to put his foot or head in where it hurts.
There have been a number of highs in the career of the experienced defender, including beating England and Spain with his country, and scoring in two semi finals for Motherwell.
All four of these games are featured in the Special Programme produced for the game tonight, along with interviews with John Lambie, Nigel Worthington, Terry Butcher, Martyn Corrigan, Stuart McCall, Mark Reynolds and Jamie Murphy.
The 32 page special edition will be available tonight for the sum of £3.
Entry to the game itself is £10 and £5 for concessions, surely the least a true Modern, Motherwell legend deserves.
