My first thought is Newcastle - Parker

Scott Parker has responded to media claims he is set for a return to the England setup under Steve McClaren by declaring that it is club before country.

Speaking to the official website, our captain said:

"I always say the same thing when I'm asked about England, and that is that my main concern is to play well for Newcastle.

"If I do that and get a call for England then brilliant, but my first thought is with Newcastle."

In other words, Parker is refusing to get carried away with media speculation suggesting he will be watched when Villarreal come to town on Saturday by new England boss Steve McClaren.

It was a surprise to every Toon fan, and many other football fans that Parker was never considered for England despite being in top form for much of the 2005/06 season, and with the change in manager, it is suggested that Parker has a fresh chance to impress.

So long as he keeps performing like he did last year, he should make that squad without a problem - if McClaren has his head screwed on that is. But for now, Parker's only concerns are with Newcastle and a successful 2006/07 season.
