Newcastle United’s preparation for the opening game of the season against Wigan has hit a snag with goalkeeper Shay Given picking up a back injury.

The problem is not believed to be serious, and the Republic of Ireland goalkeeper is expected to be fit for the Wigan game.

Newcastle have been allowed to withdraw Given from the Ireland squad as the Magpies continue to prepare for the opening day of the season.

Roeder said:

“Steve Staunton has allowed us to withdraw Shay from the Ireland squad for the game against Holland,

"Instead, Shay will remain on Tyneside and have treatment for a slight back problem.

"I was grateful to Steve for allowing Shay to stay here and receive treatment."
