Glenn Roeder will take in the Republic of Ireland's friendly against the Netherlands tomorrow evening to take another look at striker Dirk Kuyt.

It is no secret that Roeder is a firm admirer of the Dutchman, whilst it is also well known that a striker is desperately needed at the club.

Said Roeder:

"He's not the quickest striker I've ever seen in my life, but there's no doubt he knows how to score a goal.

"He is a very, very hard working player, and his body language on the pitch suggests he is the sort of player you'd like in your dressing room. He is very committed to the team effort.

"There are lots of plusses as far as Dirk Kuyt is concerned, but I do know we are not the only club who are interested in him.

"Another club, in the top four, are very strongly interested in him.

"We'd like to find the possibility of bringing this particular player to Newcastle, and we're working hard on that at the moment.

"I'm hoping he is going to start for Holland against the Republic in Dublin, and I will be on the plane to see the game."

The United boss also hopes to see Stephen Carr and young winger Alan O'Brien in action, but won't be seeing new (and so far only) signing Damien Duff or goalkeeper Shay Given after both withdrew with minor injuries. Both are expected to be fine for the season opener against Wigan on Saturday.
