In a 5-1 victory against Middlesbrough reserves, Andrew Carroll got his first hatrick in a Newcastle strip.

Shola Ameobi also managed 70 minutes after returning from a double hip operation, and scored Newcastle reserves 4th goal.

There were injury scares for Peter Ramage and Andy Carroll, but both players managed to return to the field.

Carroll first headed hard in goal after a cross from Pattison, and his second came in a similar fashion just a minute later, as he got down lower to head in David Edgar's low cross.

Carroll sealed his hatrick later in the game, slotting home a penalty after Ameobi was brought down in the box.

Newcastle's wingers were working well as Ameobi's goal was a tap in from yet another cross from Alan O'Brien.

Godsmark got the 5th for Newcastle after 87 minutes, but it was Carroll who stole the show again.

Carroll said:

"It feels great to get my first hat-trick for the club and it's been a good four days for me.

"I was so pumped up on Saturday when the gaffer told me I was going on, and hopefully I'll get a few more run outs before the end of the season."
