Barton Challenge To Be Considered By FA

By Tyne-Talk
February 10 2008

Newcastle United midfielder Joey Barton has hit the headlines once more this morning, this time for his antics ON the pitch. The 25 year old stands accused of allegedly taking a swing at Aston Villa's Shaun Maloney during yesterdays match.

The former Manchester City player who is already on bail for Actual Bodily Harm and Affray will be investigated by the FA after referee Lee Mason missed the incident and therefore failed to punish Barton.

The off-the-ball incident happened in the first half of the match, and whilst the referee didnt see it, the live television cameras captured every second.

The incident was followed in the 2nd half by a scrap between fellow midfielder Emre and Villa's Reo-Coker, both players had to be seperated during the game and once again after the final whistle had blown.

Good to see our Central midfield with a bit of aggression...Barton was rubbish in that game mind...(Sm53)

My main concern is that the FA will flag it up as a assault. If THAT happens it jeapodises his bail.

Its not often on the pitch assaults go through the criminal courts. But with this hanging over him chances are someone will call for it to go all the way.

Not sure when we will hear the verdict

Exactly how I feel Luke...he's a liability.

You can see it in his face...he's a vicious little criminal.

Scouser through and through.

..it wasn't half as bad as it was made out to be...

..the bloke was just flailing his arms about as he fell - both were - they managed to freeze-frame and slow down the shot where it looks like his arms is going in his face and body..must have only been a split second...

..I think - because it was Barton - a big thing got made out of it.
I'll be suprised if he gets much punishment for this.
I think it would be mad simply to ditch him when we haven't got a replacement either...fair enough if you reckon we should sell him on in the Summer - but if Keegan starts channelling some of his own known ability - then we have a midfield goal scorer.

Something we don't have at the minute, Milner aside.

I'm with jimmy on this one, it's only because its Barton.

Malone was clearly started it by running into him, what's he supposed to do. I've seen alot worse on corners.

Barton needs to take a leaf out of smith's book and give up the drink.

FA have said they aren't going to look into the matter. They've also overturned Bowers red card.

Midfield goal scorer? Maybe, but he's never been one-

Joey Barton:
143 appearances, 16 goals = .11 goals/app

He's another box-to-box runner, a holding CM. We never have problems finding these guys. If anyone would buy Barton, I would sell him.

He took ages to step up a gear at Man City tuny - but when he did grow up and start playing...he was a goal scorer..and we bought him as 1...

He scored 6 goals in 2005/2006 season..not long before we got him...

...those stats go back to when he barely wasn't scoring at all as a kid...if you look at the past 2 seasons - even 1 before coming here - he is a goal scorer..

...he is an attacking midfielder more then capable (and expected in my opinion) of scoring goals for us how he has developed as a player at City.

Even last season - when City were gash - he scored 6 goals out of very little...not loads of goals...but I want 6 off him this season as well..we have arguably much better players around him to afford better chances on goal...

I remember a couple of good goals he scored from 20-30 yards out as well...he is a goal scoring attacking midfielder as well as providing

No Prem club can have him for now - regardless if you (or the many of other fans) want to sell him...

I just want to see him playing well and scoring.

You're right on several points, Jimmy. Especially the one about no other team wanting Barton. Given that and the fact that the club spent nearly 6M on him, I understand that every effort should be made to get something out of him.

Also, I cede your point on his goal-scoring. But he's not the creative, run-making, free kick-taking, service-providing AM that this team desperately needs. He's more like a somewhat better version of Parker or rather like Dempsey at Fulham. But if he starts banging them in, I could care less about his 'style of play.'

He has obviously had a disastrous start to coming here.

He is a more attacking version of Parker in my opinon yeah - would go with that...main difference being he can score more goals for us...and he isn't actually as good at other parts of his game as Parker is...

True, true...Barton's tackling hurts to watch sometimes. But he's a ball of energy in the midfield and I hope he can get his life-and his goalscoring form-back on track.

I think Emre and Barton with Milner or zoggers together with the likes of Owen, Smith and Martin up top would be intersting to see. Or maybe even Zog, owen and martins up top? (Sm100) Loads of pace in the front line.... yes I know they are small but Owen has scored the last two games on headers and service from zog and martins I think would work because they would blow pasted most in not all defenders in the league with their speed
