Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Man City v Newcastle

By Tyne-Talk
January 27 2009

Newcastle United travel to Manchester City for tomorrow's game with Shay Given in goal; the loyal keeper who looks set for a move to Mark Hughes's new build squad. City have won 2 of their last 6 games and drawn 1, whilst Newcastle have drawn 2 and won 2 of their last 6. Just 2 points and 3 Premier League places separate the two sides.

Tonight, Manchester City are in 11th place, whilst Newcastle occupy the 14th spot, however by kick off tomorrow this is likely to have changed. Joe Kinnear will be hoping his side take advantage of the midweek game to ensure Hughes's side do not creep too far up the table should they win their game in hand.

Craig Bellamy and Nigel De Jong, both new signings for City are likely to start, however whilst they have no new injuries they will be without, Martin Petrov, Valeri Bojinov, Benjani, Dietmar Hamann and Michael Johnson. Richard Dunne will miss the game through suspension, part of his 4 match ban.

Newcastle have their own new signing to unveil, Peter Lovenkrands is expected to make his debut whilst Obafemi Martins (hernia op), Mark Viduka (groin strain), Habib Beye (knee), Cacapa (knee) and Kadar (broken leg) are all injured. Shola Ameobi (sprained ankle) and Alan Smith (Achilles) were both scheduled to return tomorrow night but look unlikely.

Nicky Butt will miss the game through suspension after being sent off against Blackburn in their last Premier League game.

Danny Guthrie could make the squad but is struggling with a hamstring injury.

Despite being unavailable for tomorrow night, Viduka, Smith and Cacapa all returned to training this week after lengthy absences.

Manchester City Provisional Squad: Hart, Schmeichel, Zabaleta, Onuoha, Richards, Bridge, Ball, Garrido, Ben Haim, Wright-Phillips, Kompany, Fernandes, De Jong, Elano, Ireland, Robinho, Sturridge, Bellamy, Jo, Vassell, Caicedo

Newcastle United Provisional Squad: Given, Harper, Forster, Krul, Enrique, Bassong, Coloccini, Taylor, Edgar, Guthrie, N'Zogbia, Duff, Gutierrez, Lovenkrands, Geremi, Donaldson, Doninger, Godsmark, Owen, Xisco, Carroll, LuaLua, Ranger

Also have no idea about the team tonight. You would think he must play Lovehandles otherwise no point in him being here. But will it be on the left in place of Nzog or up front with Owen.

Hard one to call.

Robinho is being held by police at the moment so I don't think he'll be playing.

Players like Duff and Jonas over complicate an easy game. Race down the line and cross. Far too often we have players who just ffanny on.
