Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Stoke v Newcastle

By Tyne-Talk
April 10 2009

Newcastle United travel to the Britannia Stadium tomorrow evening where Stoke City host the televised 5.30 Kick Off. Both teams have lost 14 games a-piece this season, however, Stoke have lost just 1 game of their last 6, winning 3, whilst Newcastle have drawn 2 and lost 4.

Newcastle go into the game 18th in the league table, desperate to secure enough points to clear them from the drop, whilst Stoke are currently 13th in the table and bidding for a top 10 finish.

Alan Shearer goes into his 2nd game in charge confident he can turn the clubs fortunes and he will be boosted by the news that Sebastien Bassong is fit to return to action after returning to training in the week having recovered from a groin injury. However Peter Lovenkrands, who was rushed to hospital with breathing difficulties (later diagnosed as a chest infection) after colliding with Ashley Cole during Newcastle's defeat to Chelsea last weekend, will not play any part.

Shearer will also be without regulars Jose Enrique (knee) and Steven Taylor (ankle) who remain injured as well as Mark Viduka (Achilles) and Joey Barton (Metatarsal) who are both on target for a return next week. Ignacio Gonzalez also remains injured and as there has been no talk of a comeback he looks unlikely to play this season.

Coloccini could be dropped from the starting eleven after several poor shows in recent weeks whilst Nile Ranger has been included in the squad.

Stoke City await confirmation as to whether Danny Higginbotham will be fit to play after picking up a back problem last week, if fit he is likely to resume his role at left back.

Stoke manager Tony Pulis could be without midfielders Salid Diao and Amdy Faye but will make that decision tomorrow.

Referee: Chris Foy

Would take a Boro win to keep Hull in sight..Boro still have to play Arsenal and Man U and Hull still have to play Liverpool and Man U.

Is anyone else watching Chelsea - Bolton?

Chelsea up 4-0 at 68 minutes. It's now 4-3 with 11 to play...

Result doesn't help us either way, but why didn't we play with that kind of drive?

1721: Newcastle boss Alan Shearer says he was planning to play Obafemi Martins against Stoke until the striker rang him this morning to say he had a groin strain.

Correction: replay shows Faye was Shoala's man. Awful choice of match-up, but not Bassong's fault.

We aren't getting any sort of the play in the midfield, no possession, no chemistry.

F*cking shite, Nicky longball Butt, why does that clown always get picked?

what is our game plan here? longball up to Shola or MO, and that is doing @#$%& all,not even including jonas? the guy does miles more defending when not in possession than Duff, and we need his height, Duff is a useless dwarf, not sure we got anything right here, the boys just dont have any understanding of what to do to win a game any more!

if theres no aggression and we dont get in their faces second half were doomed!

Great work by the men off the bench. Jonas changed the pace of the game. Andy won EVERY ball that came his way and put one in the back of the net.

Beye is my MOM though. His pressure kept out two clean break goals by forcing them wide.

It's a starting point... need a better performance next week against Spuds.

Ameobi is just a waste of space.. Carroll even picked up his man during set pieces too.

Well Shearer did say this week that his players are not fit.

One of the pundits on SSN this lunchtime said they were watchinig Owen the other day and he could hardly run properly

If Carroll plays the whole game we win 1-0. How many times did he clear the ball out of the box in the second half!? The kid is a monster in the air, he rarely loses. Shola blew the Stoke goal with his shitty marking. We may need to go back to the 4-3-3 with Carroll taking the spot that Viduka had last year. We get Barton, Martins, S. Taylor, and Enrique back and things will get better.

Shola should look at Carroll and learn how to win a header.. Ameobi is the worst target man in the league.. as I've said a million times Martins is a better target man than Ameobi. Hell a pogo stick would be more useful.
