Sir Bobby Robson Passes Away Aged 76

By Tyne-Talk
July 31 2009

Newcastle United legend Sir Bobby Robson has sadly passed away at the age of 76 after a long running battle with cancer. The former Newcastle United manager proudly held his Sir Bobby Robson Foundation match last week between England and Germany at his beloved St James’ Park surrounded by players and professionals who admired him and respected him for decades from across the globe.

Sir Bobby was battling cancer for the 5th time in 15 years, but was diagnosed as terminal in August 2008. As a result he threw himself into charity work for The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation, a charity set up specifically to fund ongoing research into the early detection and treatment of cancer.

Sir Bobby looked very frail at the match last week but was noticeable enjoying himself as England won 3-2 thanks to a Shearer penalty.

His family have confirmed he died peacefully at his home early this morning and that they will be holding a private funeral.

Im a Leeds United fan, and I was deeply saddened of the news of Sir Bobby's passing earlier today. I attended his testamonial on Sunday and it was an emotional experience as earlier reports said Sir Bobby wouldnt be well enough to attend, but was fantastic for football fans across the country to pay one last mark of respect to him when he came. Shows the strength and character of him.

He was a great man, and a true footballing legend.

RIP Sir Bob.

In an age of over paid, over rated players wih no class and nobodies wanting their fifteen minutes of fame on reality tv, Bobby stood out as a shining example of how to live your life and conduct yourself.

Top man. Hope they name a stand after him or something.

Worst mistake the club (whether it was FFS or Sir John Hall)did was to get rid of him. They should have benched, then sold Dyer, Bellamy & Co instead at that time.

RIP SBR

For me I can't remember a football manager that commanded the respect I had for Sir Bobby.

It shows the respect that he had, the players who played for him have all came out and said great things. Football fans across the country have posted messages on numerous websites, even if he never managed there clubs. Look at the turn out he had at the game last Sunday compared to the fans who went to the Leeds match, there were loads more.

To me he was a one off and a true great. R.I.P
