Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Newcastle v Reading

By Tyne-Talk
August 15 2009

Newcastle United host Reading FC today in the 2nd game of the season, on the back of a 1-1 draw at West Brom last weekend. Whilst Reading travel also having drawn in their opening game but arrive at St James' Park on the back of an impressive 5-1 win in their midweek Carling Cup tie against Burton.

Caretaker manager Chris Hughton welcomes new loan signing Danny Simpson into the squad, whilst Damien Duff could potentially be absent due to his imminent departure to Premier League side Fulham.

Newcastle are without Nicky Butt (hand) and Danny Guthrie (hamstring) who both missed last weekend's game but are both back in training.

Steve Harper who was stretchered off last weekend with concussion has been passed as fit and will return in goal, whilst Tim Krul will go back on the bench.

Reading manager Brendan Rogers is likely to revert back to his team that held Nottingham Forest to a 0-0 draw after making 9 changes in midweek. He could also have striker Noel Hunt as an option as the 26 year old has recovered from a foot injury.

Rogers will be without defender Andre Bikey who is serving his fourth game of a five match ban.

Fact: - Newcastle haven't won in 13 of their last 14 league games.

Fact: - Reading have lost just once in their last 16 away league games

Fact: - The last time these teams met at St James' Park in April 2008 Newcastle won 3-0 with strikes from Obafemi Martins, Michael Owen and Mark Viduka - none of who remain at the club.

Its gonna be a tough one but we need to make St James' a fortress this season if we're going to achieve anything.

Lets start as we mean to go on lads! (Sm128)

Reading has to be one of the favorites to make the playoffs this year, despite losing Doyle up front. Regardless, we can't drop points at St. James this year if we want to finish top 6. A draw isn't sufficient.

They'll definitely be around the playoff positions at the end of the season, but West Brom have a better squad and we got a point there, so not we're at home we should beat them...never that simple with Newcastle United though.

Good opening period, in my opinion. Best possession I've seen from a Newcastle side in a long long time, and most of it was positive passing.

I think its very interesting the see Moat there with MA and DL - espn360 stream has shown them chatting and laughing many times and of course the celebration at the goal was classic....interesting.

Performance wise, we are clearly lacking flair going forward and lacking any pace upfront. Would love to see Ranger come on for Shola, although now that he has scored i imagine it will be Carroll that comes off.

The team is not balanced...Nolan, Barton and Smith all want to be in the middle... We can't play all three together. We need one of them off and put Lua Lua on.

Shola may have scored but he almost missed the header completely... we need more pace and mobility up front.

BTW: From Chris Burton on the Sky Sports Score Centre commentary: "More elaborate play from Gutierrez with no end product. He does like to beat everyone in sight before offloading to a teammate."

This is just the start we needed. Big home away after a credit worthy away draw. Now we've got another home game, time to keep the momentum! Having said that with NUFC we might just do the opposite...hope not.

It's a hat-trick for Shola Ameobi -- I was not expecting to hear that said any time soon! Well played lads, a crowd of over 36,000 at times like these is really good. Hopefully we can carry it on on Weds with a win against Sheff Weds at home!

Great game. We were a bit patchy in the first half, but the second half we had all of the ball and played really well. Could have won by a few more actually. I can't remember the last time we produced so many good goal scoring opportunities.

Any news on the Barton injury?
