Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Newcastle Utd v Doncaster Rovers

By Tyne-Talk
October 24 2009

Newcastle United host Doncaster Rovers this afternoon after dropping three points in midweek allowing other teams to catch up on points. After a bright start to the season, Chris Hughton's side have won just one game in their last six and lost three. Doncaster Rovers travel on the back of a win against Peterborough but that too is their only win in their last six games.

Newcastle will be without Steven Taylor (hamstring), Shola Ameobi (foot), Joey Barton (foot) and Alan Smith who will serve a 1 match suspension for picking up his 5th yellow card of the season.

Fabricio Coloccini returns from a groin problem.

For Doncaster defender Gareth Roberts is expected to return to the squad after recovering from a calf strain and Simon Gillett is expected to return after being passed fit from a thigh strain. Brian Stock is out with a knee injury as is Adam Lockwood who has a foot injury and Byron Webster (elbow). Also out for Doncaster through injury are Sean McDaid and Steve Brooker (both knee) but Mark Wilson will be looking to make an impact after picking up some pitch time in midweek following his return from a calf injury

Fact: Doncaster go into the game having never beaten Newcastle United in any competition.

Fact: Newcastle go into the game with 7 clean sheets in the Championship this season, conceding just 8 goals.

The radio link on the other thread works.

We are screwed unless we get a grip. I have only just managed to get the sound on my laptop to work.

Obviously we are down a goal but how are we playing.... from SSN I get the impression we are being walked over.

Our team:
Harper, Jose Enrique, Khizanishvili, Taylor, Kadar, Nolan, Guthrie, Gutierrez, Butt, Harewood, Carroll.

Must say I was disappointed seeing Harewood starting again, while poor Ranger hasn't been given enough chances this season. Today was the ideal chance for him to get a game. Furthermore anyone know how Kadar is playing? We also need some pace desperately.

Agreed. As the radio commentator said, "a win is a win, but it really is only further papering over the cracks."

Squad depth is an issue, now exacerbated by Simpson's injury and Kizanishvilli's looming suspension.
(Sm19)

Having a midfielder as our top scorer will not do for the entire season.
(Sm19)

Papering over cracks indeed.

On the other hand, WBA drew and Cardiff went second. If they're the next best thing in this division, we should still get into the playoffs.

Then again, the way Nolan's playing I have to guess a bid's going to come in, so...

A strange season continues.

Clubs will bid for Nolan, but hopefully he will stay for the season, good news back at the top of the division

I was at the game (Leazes/Milburn corner).
The crowd there was NOT kind to Harewood who was not firing on all 4 burners (I'm not even sure he had 1 burner lit (Sm105))

Great result (Sm128)
