Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Derby County v Newcastle Utd

By Tyne-Talk
February 8 2010

Newcastle United travel to Pride Park tomorrow night where 18th place Derby County host the leaders; Both sides go into the game having won three, drawn two and lost one in their last six competitive games. Whilst Derby managed a draw at the weekend, Newcastle thrashed Cardiff City by five goals to one and will be looking to increase their lead over title rivals West Brom and Nottingham Forest.

Chris Hughton will recall Alan Smith (thigh) to the side after he failed to be fit for the team that faced Cardiff on Friday night. Nicky Butt remains sidelined with a thigh problem and Fabricio Coloccini is unlikely to be available due to a hamstring injury. Long term injuries to Jose Enrique (hamstring) and Steven Taylor (medial ligament strain) mean they will both be absent and whilst Joey Barton is due to return to training this week he is unavailable for tomorrow night.

Derby who will be looking to extend the gap between them and the drop zone are without Dean Lealock (knee) and Lee Hendrie (hamstring), however they could welcome David Martin to make his debut should his emergency loan signing be completed in time. New signing Javan Vidal will also be pushing for his debut. Lee Croft could play some part after returning to training this week having recovered from a hamstring injury.

Fact: Newcastle will be looking for their first win over Derby County in nearly 8 years.

Fact: Derby have failed to score in 12 league games this season.

Grudge match this one...for us supporters, who remember our atrocious displays vs. Derby in the PL a couple seasons back.

Identical starting XI as Friday night. Playing it safe with Smith and Colocinni's injuries is the right move. Having depth is a luxury we haven't had in the last few years.

Its not great to be losing at half time but we can still come back in the second half. Lovenkrands for Best might be a good move but unfortunately I have no idea whose playing well or not, so lets hope we score early in the second half and then keep the changes for later. Plus its the same team which thrashed Cardfiff so perhaps this will be a wake up call for them as they could have got complacent. Howay the lads! Lets have a good second half now. .

we can take a hit mate. one defeat is bad news, but not the end of the world. regroup for saturday, get it out of our system and move on.
maybe losing after so long will be more useful than the load of draws we got lately, in terms of provoking a reaction from the team and the manager. three draws is 6 points dropped, lose once and come back fighting and maybe we'll win a couple again, eh?

could be worse, we could be cardiff

Unfortunately tunyc is right, we've just squandered a good lead and if we continue in the same way we'll be lucky to make the play offs.

Optimism won't work it's time to be realistic.

C'mon Newcastle, more performances like last Friday please.

To be honest we aint played that well all season had loads of scrappy wins some real hard fought draws and only 2 good all round performances i can think off Ipswich and Cardiff we have gotta dig deep now and go on another good run if we can go say 5 unbeaten and win 3 of em be interesting to see how the tables looks then

Take away 3 performances this year we have been crap, even though it is always cr@p dropping points this may be the best thing for us, we were drawing far to many games and gives us the kick up the @rse that was needed, the pressure is on the tean now to make sure we get back and try to get a point lead again
