Hughton & Robbins - The Aftermath

Both Newcastle United manager Chris Hughton and Barnsley manager Mark Robbins spoke out after yesterday afternoons match with Hughton being the happier of the two managers. Whilst Hughton praised his players and discussed the clubs lead at the top of the Championship, Robbins is unhappy at how the dismissal of his 1st choice goalkeeper turned the game.
Hughton told Sky Sports he wouldn't be taking anything for granted;
"I don't think you can. As good as we were today, we have some very tough games coming up and we are also aware that a couple of poor results, a couple of defeats, others getting wins, life becomes harder and the gap becomes tighter, so I don't think you can afford to."
Robbins told the Official Barnsley site;
"I thought we were doing okay until the sending off. I am disappointed with the decision because, even at first glance it did not look like he had caught him.
Peter Lovenkrands told Luke (Steele) afterwards that he had not made contact but he had to go over. I always felt that we could have got something from today but we struggled after the sending off.
Sometimes it can be tough to play against ten men but Newcastle did not find it difficult today.
The sending off was a decisive moment. I have my goalkeeper saying he did not catch him and Peter telling him the same afterwards. The referee has said he will take a look at it but he has told me that the law states ‘trip or attempt to trip' although that is new to me. That was the decisive moment in the game."

Saying that, tough sh17, plenty of decisions have went against us and you just have to get on with it. After the penalty, they cant blame the next five goals on only having ten men. Sometimes playing against ten is harder depending on how the players react and they just fell apart.
If it had went the other way then Robbins would have said nish and cheered on the scorer of the penalty.

Intent to trip on a free run on goal is still a red card. It gets written up as a professional foul regardless of contact if it's obvious that the defender can't get to the ball. If Steele touches the ball at all, which he didn't, it's not a penalty or a sending off. Loven didn't get touched, but he did have to go down, as jumping over Steele put him off balance.
