I think he is more effective when he is just sitting in the middle. He can spray a good ball and gets us moving quickly but can also stick his foot in. He isnt the quickest which means he may not be quite as good pushing on as others.

Keep it up mate. Never been convinced he has what it takes in the premier but he is still only young and a good run of games will do him the world of good.

My mate who is a Liverpool fan said when we signed him we got a steal for the money and was gutted that he left, not because he thought he was a first team player at the time but had the potential to be a very good player in the premiership. He said even though he is not the quality of Gerrard but was in the same mould as him, bar Gerrard is a c@nt, and would have liked him to stay in case of injuries.

When Guthrie signed in the premiership he didn't perform but then he didn't play week in week out, but then most didn't perform. This season he has been stuck out wide and everybody agrees that isn't his best position, and now in the centre of midfield he is showing what he is made of, a decent run, a bit faith in the lad and he will show what he can do in the top flight.

For me it is a tough on on where to play him, either as a holding midfielder or creative midfielder, but think he would be better in the Smith role and then go after somebody who could play the Emre role, with the pace of Lovernkrands, Jonas and Routledge we could be a half decent team, who could counter attack or take the game to other teams.

Although I didn't think he was amazing last year, I thought he was consistently average enough. Butt's lack of pace pulled Guthrie further back than I would have preferred to have him, but he did snag a great goal at Pompey last season.

Like you, I'm not sure if he's better served as the combative defensive mid or the creative guy. He's got good vision for a through ball, and an eye for goal; however, someone with a bit more pace would probably do better going forward.

People tend to forget that Guthrie is only 22 years old (23 in April). He can only get better for the next couple years.

I think Guthrie is going to great in a couple of years, but a lot will depend on who he playing with in the centre of midfield. If they can form a good partnership then we could be laughing
